      Advantages

      Disadvantages

A very cold changing mat, but suitable for older babies

While shopping for items for our new baby we came across this changing mat in Tesco for £5. We decided that we would pick one up as usually we pay around £10 from Mother care for a very similar mat. It is based on a Disney finding Nemo theme so child friendly but it also looks good quality too. It has a picture of a sea bed with characters from the show swimming along, and there are bubbles floating around, and the words hello little friend printed across the mat. There are a range of colours to the mat to make it bright and appealing for babies. It did grab our attention sitting on the shelf as it is blue in colour and it has lots of sea animals printed over it. It is not too busy so it is distracting, but bright and bold enough for a young baby to enjoy looking at.

The design is a simple rectangle mat that is made up of a waterproof outer layer, and has padding inside so it is comfortable and convenient for little one to lay on. The two sides and top of the mat are raised a little at the edges, so your little one is kept in the middle of the mat rather than rolling off. It is perfect for changing little ones bum in a clean and convenient area. The waterproof mat is perfect in case on any accidents, as it has raised side to try and contain it to the mat, and the mess can just be wiped up.

It is a good size, not the biggest changing mat we have owned, but I would say it would suit up around until a year old comfortably. My seven week old son looked tiny as a newborn, but now he is filling it out nicely. It is nice and wide so even while little one throws their arms and legs around they stay in the middle of the mat. The mat itself is rather thick so it provides a cushioned base for little one even on hard surfaces. It could be a little thicker but it is suitable for providing an area to change my sons bottom. There are thicker changing mats available, but for £5 this still seems good value. My problem is the plastic coating just seems a little too plasticy, and it's not great for new born babies to lay on.

Also, because of the waterproof material it is impossible to put a young baby directly on to the mat. The surface is absolutely freezing at times so I usually have to put a towel down if I want to get him changed and dressed on the mat. For changing his bum I still find I need a muslin square to put underneath his bottom, or he is irritated by the surface of the mat. This is something I have found to be a problem with all changing mats, so not just this one, but it does make things more difficult.

Another downside is that overtime the mat seems to have deflated a little. When we first purchase it the middle of the mat seemed a lot thicker, meaning more comfort, but looking at it today it just seems a little worn already. Considering my son is only seven weeks old I hope it does not continue to thin as it would reduce the comfort for little one. As the material is waterproof it is very easy to keep clean. A simple wipe down with some anti bacterial wipes and it comes up as good as new. If there are any accidents and my son decides he needs the toilet mid change, the mat protects the surrounding area and makes it a lot easier to clear up.

While suggesting this changing mat, I came across it reduced on the Tesco website to just £2.50. While I do not find them useful with a younger baby, as my children get a little older I find them perfect for changing them. They are a clean, comfortable and convenient place to change your little one. I would recommend this mat for that reason, but for young babies you will need something at hand to warm it up a little. It is not the best quality, but for the price it is not bad value.

        Not one I would recommend

When I had Jayden my mum decided to keep some nappies etc at hers to save me bringing some with me when I went round, she also bought a changing mat from Tesco too.

The changing mat measures approximately 74cm's x 44cm's, and is 2cm's deep with a border of thicker padding, approximately 5cm's, around the edge. The changing mat is padded with foam and has a plastic cover on it. My mum paid approximately £4.00 for it as it was reduced at the time. It is currently selling for £5.00.

The Hello Little Friend changing mat is just a basic changing mat with a scene on it from the Disney film Nemo, its a mint green colour and shows a lovely picture of a smiley Nemo along with a cute turtle. The mat is an underwater scene with colourful seaweed and other little bright orange fish. The word Hello Little Friend are written across it in a blue colour. It would be suitable for both girls and boys and the bright coloured fish are appealing to little people.

The mat is a good size and works perfectly well as a changing mat, the extra padded border used to keep Jayden in place however now he's crawling he can easily get himself off it. The plastic material makes it easy to wash in hot soapy water or just wipe over with a Dettol wipe.

This changing mat was bought when Jayden was a month old, he's now 9 months and the mat is falling apart. The seam across the bottom has completely split allowing the foam inside to poke out, my dad has temporarily taped it together so Jayden doesn't get the foam which of course would head straight for his mouth! The seams around the other edges are starting to come apart slightly too, not enough for the foam to come out but coming apart all the same.

All in all this changing mat hasn't lasted well at all, its the one I keep at my mums so it hasn't been used everyday like the mat we have at home which we bought from Matalan and is still in good condition, to be honest I'm disappointed in it. As a changing mat it was perfectly functional but as regards to lasting, well it hasn't!

If you are looking for a changing mat either for your own baby or as a gift I would personally steer clear of this one.
