Advantages: Very good for problem skin

Disadvantages: Quite expensive

I've just bathed my two kiddiwinkles and they are currently engrossed in Waybaloo so I have a few moments to myself... bliss. What is even nicer is that all around me the gorgeous scent of Halos n Horns Baby Bath (For Angelic Souls by the way) is drifting throughout my home. My children are edible at the moment, they really do smell that good.

We discovered the Halos n Horns range when my daughter was a baby. She had extremely sensitive skin and she struggled with any cleanser other than water. We used water and cotton wool for as long as possible, but as her poos got messier we did look for an alternative. We tried a few brands, but even the slightest droplet in a bath of water was enough to irritate it. Then I saw Halos and Horns baby bath in our local Tesco and we tried it. I was over the moon to find out that it agreed with her skin. It was nice to be able to finally let her smell like her nursery peers- all fluffy and baby-like. No stale spew smells here anymore.

I do have to admit to liking the tube that it comes in. It is white with the halos n horns logo and a little design in the middle. It's more modern than good old Johnsons Baby Bath, which I have used and loved in the past. Sitting on the side of the bath it screams "Shove your Johnson's. Look at me!" Ok, well it doesn't really, but it does look nice and clean and fun. On the front of the tube it says "Dermapaedic" and for me this is the most important aspect of the product.

Dermapaedic? Is that even a word?

Not exactly. Dermapaedic is actually a trademark owned by the Halo group. It stands for the fact that their products are free from a whole manner of nasties that you might find in other cleansers. For me, these nasties have never affected my skin at all, but it seems as if my daughter finds them hard to deal with. In this particular product you will find NO

SLS
Sodium Lauryl Suphate. This is a cheap and effective agent that creates foam and bubbles. I dont want to go into too much detail, as I am definitely far from an earth mother so I wouldn't be completely clued up on these chemicals. I use lots of chemicals at home, but I am increasingly trying not to, the more that I learn.

Phthalates
You may have heard of these recently as there has been some publicity about trying to phase them out due to health concerns.

Methylisothiazoline (MIT)
This is a powerful preservative used in shampoos and toiletries. Research suggests that It can cause allergic reactions and irritate the eyes and skin

Parabens
I am going to lift the parabens description straight from Halos n Horns website, because it scares the bejesus out of me:

"Parabens are a group of preservatives (commonly used in most shampoos and toiletries, just check the back of pack). They are very effective because they are aggressive and efficient at destroying the bacteria that can form and grow in these products. It's because they're strong that they are another common irritant responsible for upsetting the natural balance of the skin. In addition, they have been earning a dubious reputation amongst those studying the causes of breast cancer. HOWEVER, it's important to add that nothing has been proven yet, but guys, we want you to feel we are offering you complete peace of mind... so we've left them out!"

Propylene Glycol

This keeps moisture in the skin by preventing water from escaping. They can also irritate skin.

So that's a list of what you wont find in this baby bath. What exactly will you find? You will only find natural conditioners and plant-derived cleansing ingredients. I have to admit, I raised an eyebrow when I looked at the ingredients on the back of the tube and it read like a chemistry lesson, but fair play to Halos n Horns, they also provide you with details to exactly what these chemical names mean if you check out their website. Decyl Glucoside for example. It is the alternative to SLS. It allows the baby bath to create bubbles, yet it is still plant derived and biodegradable.

The ingredients list for the Baby Bath is as follows, I am including this, as some parents know exactly which chemical irritates their child, so a quick scan of this list will tell you if this product is worth trying:

Aqua Decyl Glucoside, Cocomide, DEA, Acrylates, Copolymer, Cocamidopropyl, Betazine, Glycerin, Glycol Disterate, Diazolidinyl Urea, Parfum, Laureth-4, Disodium EDTA, Sodium Hydroxide and Denatonium Benzoate.

Bubbles? It's not a bath without Bubbles.

You would be forgiven for thinking that with this being a "kind" product, that it would not have enough detergent to create any bubbles for your children. It is actually one of the most bubbliest baths that we have ever used. A little goes a long way too. I would also say that the fragrance is quite strong, you really do smell it throughout the house when you are using it. My three year old came out from his bedroom while I was running the bath tonight and he said "Mummy, I smell a bath" so that is some indication at how scented it is. It smells like the distinctive baby smell that you would associate with the likes of Johnsons Baby Powder, yet at the same time there is something slightly more fruity with this brand- it has a little bit more impact.

Pricewise, it retails at around 3.50, so it is a bit more expensive than some of the other brands out there, but for reassurance for you baby if they do suffer from sensitive skin, this is worth the extra money. It also lasts longer than some of the others out there, I would certainly give Halos n Horns two thumbs up.

Summary: Ideal bubble bath for little babies with sensitive skin.

Excellent review. I don't actually subscribe to the 'chemicals are bad' theory of...well...life in general, but if you've a child with sensitive skin, it makes sense to find as gentle a product as possible.

I do like how the packaging points out that there is nothing proven about paraffins - refreshing!
