Advantages: Allow baby to play/swim in the water with no accidents
Disadvantages: Could work out pricey for regular swimmers
My family aren't really big on swimming but ever so often when we're on holiday or during a trip to the beach it's fun to take a dip in the water and have a splash around, as toddlers my children have always enjoyed playing in water, including a tiny paddling pool in nanny's back garden, but before they were toilet trained there was always a certain dilemma, do you let them go nappy less and hope they behave or use a regular nappy that's likely to swell up as soon as it hits the water, of course when it comes to swimming pools these aren't exactly an option and so there is really only one choice- swim nappies.
Huggies Little Swimmers are disposable nappies designed specifically for use in the water, shaped like pull up nappies with no Velcro tabs to do them up, they have stretchy sides which give a more comfortable fit for your little one and their tear away sides make removing the nappy simple and quick. They come in bright designs, currently Disney Little Mermaid, Winnie The Pooh and Finding Nemo, and are available in 3 sizes Small-16-26lbs, Medium-24-34lbs and Large-32lbs +. Generally they are available in packs of 10-12 nappies depending on the size you require (small=12 nappies, medium=11 & large=10) and can be easily found in supermarkets and pharmacies from £3.99 upwards. The nappies have a unique absorbent material in both the nappy lining and outer which protects it from the water, meaning it doesn't swell up, but which also keeps baby messes in, and the leak guards around the legs provide extra protection from any accidents escaping into the water.
We've used these nappies quite a bit in the past as my 2 little ones have grown up but because our swimming interest is quite limited I found I only ever needed one pack in the required size as we'd only just about get through the pack in time for my little one to have grown out of that size, a pack would last us the whole weeks holiday but of course people who swim regularly will really see the benefits from a product like this. My little ones were always comfortable in the nappies and I never found it left them with any form of nappy rash (which other Huggies did) or any sore patches which I had imagined they would due to the more plasticky nature of the nappy.
The nappies never bloated when they came in contact with the water and most importantly they never leaked any unpleasant substances that either of the little ones had produced. The bright designs are fun and eye catching for little ones and are great for distracting your toddler if they seem unsure about wearing a nappy different to their usual style, the pictures do not fade or run either so there's no worry of dying the water or your childs skin. I always found the nappies easy to put on and take off and of course with them being disposable you just need to pop them in the waste bin (in a nappy sack should there've been any waste) and you're done, no need for washing and laundering etc.... of course that may not sit well with the environment conscious people out there but if it's convenience you're after you can't go wrong with these.
Nowadays my little ones are both toilet trained and don't need the swim nappies but our third baby is on the way and we'll undoubtedly use these again should we want to take a dip in the local pool or wade in the sea. I can highly recommend them to parents who don't swim all that regularly but for those who take their kids more often a more permanent solution may be best as the cost could soon mount up with them costing £3.99+ on top of your regular nappy costs.
