Advantages: Stops any nasty things being leaked into the pool!
Disadvantages: Expensive
My son is now 15 weeks old, when he turned 9 weeks I decided I would like to take him swimming for the first time. I love swimming and I am a firm believer that you should introduce things like this early to babies so that they can get used to it.
I went to Asda to purchase some Huggies little swimmer swimming nappies, the first thing I noticed was how expensive they are. A pack of 12 nappies cost £5.85!!! I did look to see if they had any home brands or cheaper brands of the swim nappies but Huggies were the only type that they stocked.
The nappies come in three sizes, small - 16-26lbs, medium - 24-34lbs and large 32+lbs. Rhys only weighed 10lb at 9 weeks but I decided to go ahead and buy the small size anyway as I thought they would be stretchy and would hopefully fit him.
Rather than the nappies having fasteners at each side, like a normal nappy, they are similar to the pull up pants, they have a stretchy piece at each side and you pull them onto your baby like a pair of underpants. I thought this was a good idea as it stops them becoming unfastened whilst in the pool.
I also didn't need to worry about the sizing as they are very stretchy, so they do fit my son fine, without being too big and there is still a lot of room for him to grow into them. Each nappy has a cute Disney design on the front of them, so whilst Rhys is still a bit too young to appreciate this now, im sure he will think they are fab in a few months time!!
Rhys has been swimming twice now and these pants have been great. Rhys has yet to do a number two in the swimming pool but I have no doubts that this nappy will hold it all in perfectly well, with no leakages!!
The only thing that puts me off these swimming nappies is the price. If you were to go on holiday and your baby will be in the pool twice a day, then you will be using a lot of nappies as you have to throw them away each time as they aren't re-usable. I have since seen that Mothercare sell nappy swim pants, they are basically a pair of swimming pants for babies with a nappy inside them, however they are re-usable, so I presume you just wash them out and dry them. These only cost £10 so will be much better for value for money as you can use them time and time again. Once this pack of nappies run out I think I will be purchasing a pair of the re-usable shorts.
Summary: I will start using re-usable swim pants as they are better value for money
