Advantages: Needed under a Happy Nappy, part of double nappy swimming school system
Disadvantages: Not secure enough for poos alone
I have used these since my baby was under a month old when we went swimming for the first time. They cost £4.49 from Boots, although Mothercare and all the supermarkets sell them too.
They come with brightly coloured pictures of Disney characters on them. The small ones we use have pictures of Nemo on, for example. The nappies themselves are blue in colour. They are not traditional nappied, but are more like pull-on pants that toddlers wear. They do not unfasten, they just have elasticated sides that you pull on like a pair of shorts.
The main problem with them is that the smallest size you can find in any shops (as far as I am aware) is Small, which is from 16lbs up. Now this is not a problem if you do a swimming class because most will insist on a double nappy system - a disposable covered by a Splashabout Happy Nappy - which means that the Little Swimmers nappy is sealed anyway.
However, what if you don't use the other nappy? Well for starters baby will have to be over 16lbs (or more if you have a long slim baby) before you go swimming which for many mums on maternity leave is not ideal.
Also, they are not known for being fantastic at holding in nasties on their own. They do not seal tightly around the legs so any more than a wee and you may have a problem. When I took my son home from swimming class one day I had to put him in a swim nappy as I had forgotten his normal ones, which i thought would be ok given that they are still supposed to be a nappy and he was 18lbs so well within the recommended weight. 20 minutes later he had filled his nappy and the poo had actually oozed out onto his car seat. Whilst I appreciate this is not the best testing ground for a swim nappy - i.e. not in the pool - it makes me wonder what would have happened if he had needed a poo in the pool wearing just a disposable nappy. I certainly will not be finding out.
All in all, they are ok with a reusable nappy on top but not very secure alone.
Summary: Definately good under a happy nappy or tight trunks, not so good alone
