Advantages: Lovely packaging
Disadvantages: Not my favourite nappy brand
8/12/12 - UPDATE: We have used up all the size 1 newborn nappies and they have not leaked and also have a great cut out bit that sits around the umbilical cord so I am really pleased with the nappies this time around.
This is a review of the Huggies Newborn Starter Kit we were bought as a gift to welcome our new baby. My Mother in Law spotted it whilst doing her weekly shopping at the supermarket and thought it was a good buy.
What's in it?
The set used to come with a hat included (I think I got one of these with my last baby!) but has now been updated with the new cotton sheets instead of the hat.
- A pack of size one nappies (27 nappies)
- A pack of Huggies cotton soft sheets (x 60) which are a new product line
- A pack of Huggies pure wipes (x64)
Once you remove the cardboard wrap which has coupons printed on the inside, you are left with a brown sturdy little square cardboard box with adorable ducks printed on it. It really is nice enough to keep as a keepsake or storage box for your baby (I love things like this!). Inside, there are nappies in a plastic pack, wipes that are sealed and the new Huggies cotton soft sheets which are in a clear plastic with tie string top.
I was not a massive fan of Huggies the first time around, we found them a bit leaky on our daughter so it was not a brand of nappy that I planned to use although I am happy to try them out. I also don't want to stockpile a load of size one nappies (like we did last time!) as they can soon be in to size two nappies if they are born a good weight. With regards to the baby wipes, it is advised not to use these on new born babies, rather cotton wool and warm water although I packed the cotton soft sheets included in the set in my hospital bag to use rather than cotton wool. I really like the cotton soft sheets for a number of uses, dry and wet and find they are a handy item to have so I will probably buy these again in the future instead of cotton wool.
Obviously, this was a gift so I don't know the exact shelf price but I know they are often on offer during baby events and that the Huggies vouchers you get in a lot of the maternity packs will work against these at the till. Inside the wrapper are also further vouchers off nappies, wipes and swim nappies so you can use them against future buys. Expect to pay around £5 although they are sometimes on offer for £3.33 in Boots if you pick the right time!
I have heard of people buying multiple sets of these when on offer, taking advantage of the coupons inside but as I am not a big fan of Huggies nappies I won't be playing this game. I do appreciate the gift though and love the duck box. We've already used the wipes on our daughter (they were OK, nice and moist but easily ripped) and the nappies will come in handy over those first few weeks with the baby. The best product for me in the set is the cotton soft sheets which are versatile and safe to use on a new born baby. You can buy these in the supermarket for around £1.30 which I don't think is too bad for 60 wipes.
Summary: Liked the soft cotton sheets in the set and of course the duck box!
