Advantages: Soft, thick, gentle.
Disadvantages: Tear easily.
After having Baby Jack recently I was lucky to be given many gifts, one of the gifts we were presented with was a goody basket full of all the things we would need for Jack including nappies, wipes, cotton wool, cream etc...The wipes included in the basket were a range of Huggies wipes including their Shea, Aloe and Pure varieties. Now I'm not usually a Huggies fan after their nappies gave Christopher a terrible case of nappy rash when he was a baby, but these were wipes not nappies and we'd been given them as a gift so it felt rude not to try them. Deciding Jack was only tiny and would probably have very sensitive skin to begin with I chose the Pure wipes as the first pack we'd try.
Huggies Pure wipes are designed to be "better then cotton wool and water" which naturally gives the impression they'll be suitable for sensitive and young skin, they are free from scent which is reassuring as many perfumes can cause skin reactions and they are free from alcohol. Huggies Pure wipes come in packs consisting of 72 wipes (64 in the Shea and Aloe versions) and are available in single packs or multipacks, generally from most supermarkets, pharmacies and general stores such as Wilkinsons, in the region of £3.00 for a 2 pack.
The wipes are quite thick and have a soft feel to them and they're embossed with teddy bears which while cute isn't exactly necessary. The wipes are all joined together with wide perforations allowing you to pull out several wipes as you need them but also allowing you to easily separate them, however they don't always stay together and it can be quite fiddly trying to get a separated wipe from the pack, kind of like when you lose the end on a roll of sellotape, this is made all the more difficult as the way the individual wipes are made means you are often left with a small torn section of wipe between your fingers and the rest still firmly in the packet.
I found while working my way through a pack that the first few wipes were very moist, almost wet, but it evened out throughout the rest of the wipes with even the last one having a satisfactory level of moistness, of course we do get through packs quite quickly as 4 week old babies produce a considerable amount of poop and you may find, if making a pack last longer, that the last few wipes are drier. The packs do come with a plastic re-seal sticker allowing you to close up the pack and prevent the wipes drying out.
Having used the wipes on Jack I have to say I was pleasantly surprised, despite the problems getting them out of the pack I found they cleaned him up well and left his skin feeling soft with no sign of redness. While I prefer to use cheaper brand wipes for hands etc I've noticed that, on the odd occasion I've grabbed a Huggies wipe in a rush, they are gentle on older skin too and leave even adult skin feeling soft, the wipes are refreshing and clean well. I've used them on my older son Christopher, who's 4 and suffers terrible eczema and allergies, and he has suffered no reaction to them, many perfumed products and wipes have caused his skin to flare up but this never happened when using a Huggies wipe. Obviously the wipes are designed with the task of cleaning babies' bottoms however you can use them for cleaning up sticky fingers, dirty faces and for removing light make-up, being so gentle means they are suitable even for those with very sensitive skin.
Other than the tearing problems my only other complaint with the wipes is that the high level of moisture often leaves the wipes very cold, I know you can get wipe warming devices but it seems an awful waste of money, poor Jack gets quite a shock first thing on a morning, on a cold day, after a night in a warm nappy, I've taken to warning him in advance that it will be cold although I'm sure at 4 weeks he has no idea what I'm talking about.
Despite my initial misgivings over using a Huggies product I have to say I was pleased with the result, the wipes cleaned Jack up well and he had no bad reaction or soreness after using them. Granted I didn't pay for the wipes and products always seem so much better if you haven't paid for them yourself but I'd happily buy these wipes myself to use on Jack and my other children, they're worth the price regardless of the problems with the wipes tearing and I'd even go so far as to say they are more pleasurable to use than Johnsons wipes due to the soft texture and thickness of the wipe.
I can certainly recommend them.
