Advantages: quick to air dry, line dry incredibly soft, inexpensive
Disadvantages: not as absorbent as a terry nappy, can be fiddly to keep closed
Imse Vimse is a Swedish made nappy. It is a shaped nappy, rather than a flat rectangle, and I received one to try to see how I got on. I found the flannelette version I recieved to be very slim fitting, and as there is no Velcro or Aplix on it, it was either pin it or fold it up inside a snug fitting wrap as a nippa (a new gadget you use instead of pins) won't grip smooth fabric. I don't use pins, so I found a Prorap brand wrap works especially well with this nappy as the legs and back are gusseted, containing any leaks that may escape this nappy. The flannette version of this nappy is not overly absorbent comapred to say a terry nappy. I found to prevent having to wring it out after a wee by my new super wee champion, I had to place a terry booster inside. This still made for a nice slin nappy that rivaled the most modern of disposables for slim fit and absorbency. Also, there is no wetness protection to it, so an additional fleece liner was required to keep my son's skin dry after a wee, though this is true of most nappies and does not alter the slim fit one jot as fleece liners are nearly tissue thin. Even with the booster and liner in, it performed well as a day nappy, but the two times I used it at night, I found it to be useless in comparison to most of my other nappies, especially my Nappy Nations and prefolds. It probably would do as a night nappy with two terry boosters in, but that would seriously bulk it up and alter the fit as well to where the side flaps would barely fold over his skinny tummy ( I know, I tried it!). Some people use two of these nappies at night, but I don't see wanting to double my wash load! Based on my experince, I would not recommend it as a nappy for an older baby who would wee a lot more, but that is my personal preference. At £4 each, it makes a very economical newborn nappy as newborns do not wet as much, though I would invest in some terries or prefolds or a couple Nappy Nations to use at nig
ht or for going out in. Though in all honesty, I found muslins to be just as effective a daytime newborn nappy, better at explosive poo containment, a lot quicker drying, and less expensive and muslins have the benefit of having more uses later. The Imse Vimse does dry relatively quickly however, so is an option to consider if you do not have a dryer and they dry super soft. Imse Vimse is available from many online stores and often can be hired to try out. Mine came from Plushpants.co.uk, and they also carry most of the popular nappy types, as well as a hire scheme. I have also seen them on UKParents Nappy Buy and Sell forum, which is an excellent place to get nappies to try before you plump for an expensive system.
