      A good basic changing mat

We have recently had our second baby and, although we still had our daughter's changing mat, I decided I wanted another one so I could have one downstairs and one upstairs in baby's bedroom. This is pure laziness on my part but I figured it would save me going up and down the stairs at changing time!

I really didn't want to spend a lot of money on such a basic and functional - and ultimately quite boring - item so I was pleased to see that John Lewis had a nice basic mat. This costs only £6.95, and although it may be possible to buy a cheaper mat elsewhere I didn't really shop around as I was happy with this price - and the free delivery that was being offered at the time I ordered!

The mat measures 70x40cm and is covered with PVC so it is easy to wipe clean.

      Plain mat

This is very little to say about the appearance of this mat. It is plain white, and has raised edges around three sides which have a spongey texture. The base of the mat is quite thin as you would expect at this price. However other than the lack of design, this really looks and feels like any other changing mat I have ever used!

The good news is that my little boy hasn't objected to being changed on such a boring looking mat! In fact, when he was smaller he seemed to really like it and after I changed him he'd often lie on this mat having a good wriggle and gurgle. Now he can crawl, however, he can't wait to get off the thing but I don't think this is anything against the mat itself. It is also very easy to wipe clean and so far is still looking as good as new.

The only slight complaint I have is that I find dirt can accumulate in the little groove around the edge of the mat, so I do need to put in a little extra effort to keep this bit clean. But this is a really minor niggle and not a reason not to buy this mat.

      In summary ...

If you are happy with a very plain looking mat that is cheap and functional then you could have no complaints about this one. It does what you need it to but it is definitely a 'no frills' item!
