Advantages: versatile, good value for money
Disadvantages: too oily, not as innocent as it looks
The product:
This rich oil comes in a clear plastic bottle with a simple design and a purple lid. It retails around £2.30 / 300ml.
The company claims that it is suitable for babies and their mothers, because it helps seal in moisture, it is a clinically proven mild fast-absorbing formula and dermatologist and allergy tested. Due to the lavender fragrance, if you use it as part of your night-time routine the calming aromas will relax you and your baby for bed.
Uses and results:
This is a versatile product with many uses:
* as a body moisturiser, especially after shower, while some water is still on the skin. However, I find it quite oily and not very well absorbed. Another reviewer says that she uses it as a face moisturiser too, but it is not suitable for me.
* as a massage oil; it's aroma does relax you and you feel sleepy, so I recommend it for bed-time but not when you are ready to wear your suit and go to work.
* as an after-sun moisturiser. My mother used the original baby oil formula (rather excessively) every summer during the '70s and '80s on us and on my father.
* as make-up remover: it removes make up very well because it has the ability to cut through the minute amounts of grease and dirt, but needs a toner afterwards to remove excessive oil.
* as sex lubricant? Beware: it is "For external use only" and non-compatible with condoms which require water-soluble lubricants.
So far so good.
Ingredients: Mineral Oil, Fragrance
Hmm..... what is "mineral oil"? Mineral oil is one of the cheap byproducts that are made from petrol! Some sources claim that it is harmful, some say that cosmetic grade mineral oil is highly refined, safe and non-irritating.

Conclusion:
The product is resistant to humidity and sun exposure so it will last for ages in the bottle. In addition, I don't see why men can't use it at bed-time. So, I gave it 3 stars because it is so versatile.
BUT
Would I use it on my baby? No. I would opt for a natural mix of cooking olive oil, water and chamomile.
Summary: Good to have a bottle in the house, but I would not use it on my baby!

- 21/06/09 I loved it too but I didn't love the mineral oil info at all!
Generally, I get angry when companies choose low quality/dubious ingredients to keep their expenses down and then they market the products with expensive ads and try to persuade us that they are good for us. This is why I always try to research the ingredients in cosmetics.
May be mineral oils were OK for the '70s, when consumers were less savvy, but I feel that now Johnson's should move on to tree oils, like olive oil. |
