Advantages: Great on the skin

Disadvantages: Tested on animals, more expensive

I always have a bottle of baby oil in my bathroom, despite the fact that I'm lacking a baby. This gets me some strange looks from visitors, until I explain that this stuff is the greatest eye make up remover known to man. It cuts through even the toughest waterproof mascara, and unlike many purpose-made lotions, it doesn't sting. Being an oil, it's super-moisturising, reducing those fine lines that tend to develop around your eyes. After a bath, it locks in 10 times more water than a conventional oil, leaving your skin feeling smooth and soft.

I can't detect much difference between brands of baby oil, quality-wise or packaging wise. They all tend to come in clear, robbed plastic bottles that are easy on the eye and pleasant to use. Johnson's is the most expensive on the market, retailing at around £2.50 for 300ml, while the Tesco own brand costs around £1.50. The major thumbs down that I give this product comes from the fact that despite the fact that they say that they are committed to phasing it out, Johnson & Johnson are still one of the worst companies for testing cosmetics on animals. So I urge you to buy own brand products instead, where the shop in question at least operates the five year no animal testing 'cut off' date.

Summary: Buy a cruelty-free alternative.
