With my first two children there was never really any call for baby oil, they were bathed in baby bubbles, hair washed with baby shampoo and afterwards were dusted with talcum powder. I always thought what we used was quite appropriate and naievely thought baby oil was probably more nuisance than help with it being 'greasy' or so I thought... Now, my daughter who will be 10weeks old on monday, has already developed eczema and cradlecap along with it, at first we tried bathing her in pure water and gently rubbing vaseline into her skin which did help with her obvious irritability but was only a short lived thing. We then purchased our first bottle of baby oil, we now use it initially straight into the bath water which immediately gives a protective coating to her skin in the water. Then once she is completely dry massage the baby oil directly onto her skin, this has helped enormously with our daughters skin and she is a much happier baby. Now, the cradlecap...my sons actually did suffer with this and I always used Dentinox Cradlecap Shampoo with no problems, we tried this once on our daughter and it was obvious it didn't agree with her eczema. Yesterday I thought 'the baby oil!' after wetting her hair with the bath water I squeezed just the equivalent of a 10pence piece worth of baby oil onto my hand and massaged it ever so gently onto my daughters scalp, once bathed and her hair dried I gently brush her hair with a baby brush to remove the loose flakes, not only did she enjoy me doing this but after using it for 2 nights it is 100% gone!!! I also take back what I initially thought of baby oil, it is not as greasy as the word 'oil' leaves you thinking and it certainly does go a long way!! Not only for these qualities, I have found that using baby oil on myself after a shower, while still wet, locks in the moisture and leaves your skin feeling...well as soft as a baby!! :)

- 26/04/01 I thought I would take the time to tell you that when I was in hospital with my first child one of the Midwives suggested using almond oil (you can buy from the cooking section in most stores) for his dry skin etc. It was marvellous and I even found it to be better than baby oil which was a hard job. I then used the same product on my daughter who has excema too. If you feel the need for even more moisturising then give it a go it really works. |
