Advantages: Easy pump action bottle

Disadvantages: Scent is far too mild and does not have the same effect on hair as Johnson's Baby Shampoo

I usually purchase a supermarket own brand top to toe wash and the occasional bottle of Johnsons baby shampoo. I adore the smell of Johnson's Baby Shampoo and how soft and shiny it leaves my toddler's hair.

After deciding however that I wanted to purhcase something a little more special and weighing up the cost of a top to toe wash and a separate Johnson's shampoo, I decided to give Johnson's Baby Top to Toe a try instead. It is currently available at £2.89 for a 500ml bottle from Tesco.

Johnson's Baby Top to Toe Wash is presented in an opaque plastic bottle with a simple label at the front, depicting the Johnson's and the 'No More Tears' logos. The translucent liquid is dispensed via a lemon pump action dispenser at the top.

This mild, all-over wash is stated as being "as mild as pure water to the skin". It is soap free, PH neutral and does not dry out the skin.

It can be used in two ways. The first is to pump a small amount onto a sponge or bath mitt, cleanse and rinse well. Alternatively you can add a little to running water as you run your child's bath.

This baby wash feels very soft and luxurious on your hands. However I was rather disappointed overall as it does not have the signature smell of Johnson's Baby Shampoo. It also does not have the same effect on my little boy's hair. In fact the end result is just the same as my usual supermarket's own brand, only without the lovely scent! After bathing my little boy with this product, the mild scent that I smelt when in the bath quickly disappears.

In addition this Johnson's Baby Top to Toe Wash does not lather very well when applied to a sponge. This in turn means that I tend to use more and more in order to feel confident that my little boy is clean. It subsequently does not last as long as my usual brand. When applied to running bath water rather than the sponge, it simply pales into insignificance!

In summary this is a product which I regret purchasing. Next time I do my weekly shop I plan to pick up a cheaper supermarket own brand product and use the money I've saved on a smaller bottle of Johnson's Baby Shampoo!

I think the expectation here has been proved by the actual experience - clearly J&J don't want to lose their customers to their traditional shampoo. But then again its good to see a product on the shelves that is soap free- handy for big people who can't use soap products.
