When my daughter was born, she was, to put it bluntly, the biggest pain in the bum possible when it came to getting her settled in to sleep . She would happily drift off if someone was holding her, but the minute you tried placing her in the cot, she's wake up, stare at you with her eyes wide and her lower lip trembling, before breaking out into a screeching and wailing . And, if she was running short on sleep, you can bet I was too .
So, I asked other mums for advice on getting her off to sleep, and amongst the various suggestions from other mums , Johnsons Baby Bedtime Bath was mentioned.
Many parenting books will stress the importance of a routine for getting your child sleeping, usually something like feed, burp, bathe, cuddle and bed . This product is designed to make it a little easier by being used at the bathtime, and containing lavender and camomile to help baby drift off easily .
The packaging is very attractive, a lilac coloured plastic bottlewith the Johnson's Baby logo on the front .It comes witha flip open lid that allows you to squirt this into the bath with no problems, and the lid is easy to flip open with one hand if you're holding a wriggling baby in the other .
The bottle tells you that this helps to calm and relax your baby, and also that is is a 'no more tears' formula, which basically means that if your child gets this into their eye, it isn't going to hurt . It's PH balanced to achieve this , and it's also gentle on a childs young skin, which of course is what you want when bathing an infant .
Instructions on how to use Johnsons baby bedtime bath are on the back of the bottle, simply add to running bath water, and swirl about to mix evenly.
This doesn't produce masses of bubbles, but then its not marketed as a bubble bath . There are still a few though, and my daughter happily played with these when she was younger . The scent of the product is mild, which is good, as I find strong lavender smells a little offputting . The scent does spread around the bathroom though, and I found it helped to relax me as I was bathing my daughter. Happy baby and a happy mum, good stuff.
When it came to putting my daughter down to sleep , I didn't notice any immediate difference - she still griped and whined, but perhaps for just a little bit less. After a few days using this bath, she really started to settle down after only a little grumbling, and although it might have only been an hours difference, it was a BIG difference to an incredibly tired mum .I also found I was less frazzled after bathing her, as the smell made me relax a bit , and she probably picked up on that too .
My daughter is now six, and sleeps brilliantly . So, we don't really NEED to use this anymore - and in general we use other baths that produce much more bubbles . Occasionally though, I will use this if she's a little bit hyperactive, and I do occasionally use it myself, as I do find the scent incredibly relaxing after a hard day .
My one small criticism of the product is that it's clear in colour, so when you're squirting it under running water it is difficult to see exactly how much you are using .I think it would be good if it were coloured just so you could see how much was being used .
This costs £2.55 for 500ml, which, if it works for you as well as it did for me, is certainly worth it for that little extra bit of calm and quiet .
