Although I am very busy during the day, when it comes to the evening I'm literally nodding off but I find that once I do get in to bed I can't seem to settle into a deep enough sleep to make me feel refreshed when I wake up. I wouldn't go as far as to say I'm suffering from insomnia, but I do at times find it hard to fully wind down on a night and so have taken to trying natural methods like a drop of lavender oil on my pillow. Whilst this has helped a lot I thought I would go one step further and use some lavender scented body products after my evening bath to work in conjunction with the oil.
I've tried various products scented with lavender but always seem to come back to buying the same one which I will discuss in this review - 'Johnson's Baby Bedtime Lotion'.
I'll be honest at what attracted me to this product initially was the very purse friendly price of just £1 - which for a bottle which holds 300ml I deemed it to be a complete bargain. I have always been a fan of Johnson's baby products, and not only used them on both of my children when they were babies, but I also used to use them regularly myself. I find them perfect for use on delicate skin such as around the eyes and always keep a bottle of baby lotion in my bathroom cabinet as I class it as a beauty staple.
I remember trying this bedtime lotion on my sons when they were babies and always liked how easy it was to apply and how quickly it soaked in to their delicate skin, not to mention the relaxing lavender scent that accompanies it, so I knew the product quite well from use on my children but until fairly recently had not tried this particular product myself.
The packaging is quite sedate being a soft white bottle, which is in the same shape and design as most Johnson's products, being upright standing, wide at the front and slimline at the side with a soft roundness that tapers in at the neck which leads to an easy to open flip top lid. The lid is a soft lavender in colour, as is the Johnson's teardrop logo on the front and this to me adds to the gentleness that the product is trying to promote. Would I say the packaging stands out amongst similar items in the shops? Not really due to the sober colouring, but the pricing was the real pull for me as was the Johnson's branded name.
On flipping open the lid, which fastens tightly but opens easily enough, I found there to be a small circular hole which didn't seem big enough at first for the product to dispense through. On tipping the bottle and gently squeezing though I found that due to the light and thin consistency that dispensing the correct amount wasn't a problem at all.
The lotion is a pale, creamy, slightly 'off white' colour which as mentioned is quite thin consistency wise and smells simply divine..as long as you are a fan of lavender scented products that is. As this is classed as a baby product the scent is subtle, but unmistakably soothing, and once applied to the skin it soaks in quite instantaneously with no need for constant rubbing. The lotion may be a light colour but as soon as it touches the skin it starts to evaporate and absorbs turning transparent within seconds.
Would I recommend this lotion? Yes without doubt this is one of the most soothingly scented products I've used and trust me when I say I've tried many. Viscidity wise lotion may not be the type I would normally opt for as I do prefer a much thicker lotion or even body creams/ butters to be honest, but the smooth silky texture of this lotion more than makes up for what it lacks consistency wise. Once applied to my skin I find that because it absorbs very quickly I end up applying almost the same amount again all over as my skin often feels slightly tacky (though I wouldn't go as far as to use the word sticky) though not fully moisturised, so economically speaking a 300ml size bottle doesn't last me as long as it probably should.
Does the gentle aroma help me to sleep easier on a night? I can't vouch that it helps me actually sleep any easier no as my mid is too coiled up like a spring with thoughts whirring through it for me to sleep, but yes the delicate scent certainly helps me to relax to a certain point. The lotion makes my skin feel soft and smooth, smells deliciously delicate and is a complete bargain at the price I paid so it gets the thumbs up from me. Would I use it on a baby? I'd have no reservations about using this as I used the 'regular' Johnson's baby lotion on both of my boys with no qualms and would definitely use this on any future offspring.
Available from most chemists, large supermarkets and some independent shops as well as a plethora of online retailers. Prices may vary but I paid just £1 as mentioned from my local Poundstretcher store where it was situated on the toiletries aisle.
Gets my vote, 5/5 from me.
I have been a fan of Johnson's products from having my first child, I am now a mother to 3 children and still love all of Johnson and Johnson's products.
I purchased this bedtime lotion as part of a bedtime routine range, I bought the shampoo, bubble bath and lotion. This lotion cost roughly £1.60 for 300ml but you can sometimes get it on offer for £1 or so and occasionally it is in the pound shops.
The bottle is white, with a purple flip top lid and tells me this is proven to help your baby sleep better due to the NaturalCalm aromas. It doesn't specifically say what is contained in the lotion but from the scent I would say Lavender and Chamomile, both known for their relaxing aromas. The lotion is also suitable for sensitive skin and is clinically proven to be mild.
The lotion is white in colour and fairly runny in consistency. It has a lovely aroma of Lavender and Chamomile and I love smelling this on my baby's skin. In fact I have been known to pinch a little bit for myself on occasion!! As it's quite runny, you do not need to use a huge amount as it absorbs nicely into the skin. It's also very good to use as a massage lotion if you like to give your baby a bedtime massage, again this is thought to relax your baby ready for bedtime.
It keeps my baby's skin lovely and soft and none of my 3 children have suffered any adverse effects from using this, in fact they all have baby soft skin! My oldest child used to suffer from eczema and I didn't use this for a while as she was using prescription cream but now she just suffers from dry skin and I find this keeps her skin nice and moisturised without flaring her eczema back up.
As for the better nights sleep, I think it works! I definitely think it's more so down to the relaxing, routine of bath, massage, milk, bed, which helps them to wind down and relax for the night but I'm sure the Lavenfer scented range also helps.
I would definitely recommend this lotion, just don't expect to use it as an answer for sleeping problems!
I bought a 300ml bottle of Johnson's Bedtime Lotion 2 weeks ago at a huge carboot sale for just 50p instead of the RRP of around £2 so was chuffed to say the least as it was brand new and never been opened. I must admit to being sceptical about products like this but for the giveaway price I thought I would give it a go because I am a poor sleeper. I reckoned if it did not help me relax then at least it would be a good lotion as Johnsons make such good products.
The bottle is as shown in the picture but has the wording 'proven to help your baby sleep better' emblazened on the front. The cap is a flip top and the actual lotion is of a fairly thick white consistency. The first thing I noticed was the lovely fragrance which reminds me of baby powder only slightly stronger and is long lasting.
The lotion, although quite thick, is easy to smooth onto the skin and is quickly absorbed and my skin feels nice and soft, supple and moisturised. As for its claim that it helps babies sleep better I can tell you that it helps this big baby (aged 60) sleep better than I have done in ages! I have been applying it after my evening bath and I slept so well the first time I used it that I thought it was just a 'one off' but every time it's used I sleep well EVERY night.
I cannot recognise the ingredients which include such things as isopropyl palmitate, ethylhexyglycerin and ascorbyl palmitate etc but is IS paraben free. The only thing I am told which gives me any clue at all is the lotion contains 'NaturalCalm TM - a patented blend of relaxing aromas' but as J & J have been leaders in the market for over 100 years I trust them.
The lotion is also 'clinically proven mild, dermatologist tested' which is good enough for me so whatever the secret patented ingredients are I have to say they have worked well on me and I am well impressed - so much so that I will even pay full price next time!
I am awarding the full 5 stars for its efficacy, packaging, consistency and fragrance plus the most important aspect - it makes me relaxed before going to bed and is definitely having a positive effect on my sleep. I would recommend trying this on babies and yourselves. I would never ever say a product works well for 100% of the population but I would certainly recommend giving it a try.
I can't remember the first time I ever tried this product on my baby but I totally love it and have used it for the last 5 years even though she is no longer a baby.
I buy the lotion from Tesco or Asda normally, just where ever I am doing my weekly shop. All the bedtime range products are now widely available. I normally get them in bulk when they are on offer.
The product comes in a white bottle with a purple lid. I normally buy the 300ml one its approximately £2 a bottle so its not badly priced.
I used this product on my daughter from her been very young and have never had any problems with her sleeping, I can't definitely say it is due to this but maybe it is!
From when I first brought my baby home and started to get her into a bath and bedtime routine I used this. I always applied it when I got her out of the bath after I had dried her.
The product is very easy to apply and absorbs really well into the skin. You don't need too much especially when they are really small a little goes a long way.
The thing I love best about the lotion is the smell. It really is gorgeous, my sister always comments how lovely my babies smell and im sure its down to this.
There is nothing better than bathing them, putting the lotion on and putting them into their sleep suit and having cuddles when they smell so lovely!
The product has lavender and chamomile in it which states that it calms the baby due to its natural aromas and its true it is truly an amazing smell.
This moisturizer is unlike others as it does not leave the skin greasy it all absorbs in and leaves the skin really soft and smooth. I have never had any problems with any of the childrens skin due to this.
If you have a baby I would definitely recommend you try this product it really moisturizes the skin well and leaves it lovely and soft as well as smelling nice - what more could you want!
As our little one nears the 2 month old stage we have been getting in early to establish a bedtime routine, so every other night before we pop him in a sleepsuit he has a little massage to not only help him sleep but also to help his lower wind which our baby suffers with. When we massage him we use the Johnson's Bedtime lotion which was brought us in a hamper when he was born.
The Bedtime Lotion comes in a nice sturdy 300 ml bottle which is generally priced around £1.29 in Tesco unless on offer. The bottle is a white strong plastic material with a lavender top. The trademark Johnson's teardrop design is on the front, also in a lavender shade stating the name of the product and that the lotion is proven to help your baby sleep better with 'NaturalCalm aroma's'
The lotion instructs you to use the lotion in conjunction with the Bedtime Bath for best results but we have continued using the normal baby bath and found the lotion still works just as well if used on its own. To use you can gently smooth the lotion all over your little ones body.
The lotion smells of lavender along with the distinguished Johnson's smells mixed in which makes a delightful mix. The lotion itself is white and a nice thickness which is not to thick and absorbs into skin quickly without leaving a greasy residue. You can continue to smell the lotion for hours afterwards. You also only need a tiny bit for each use so I am not even half way through my bottle after a month of everyday use so it works out as amazing value for money!
As for its effectiveness this is debatable. Although our baby does sleep much better when we have used the lotion I am not sure if this is more to do with the massage he has, the lotion working its magic or a combination of the two but either way he does sleep for longer and I find using it for his nightly massage great for me and the best thing I have tried. Other lotions were either too greasy or not moisturising enough, left residues or got everywhere, whereas this bedtime lotion is perfect.
With my baby boy I decided early on that I wanted to get him into a bedtime routine in order to try and get a full nights sleep!
We bought the bedtime bubble bath and also the bedtime lotion. We decided on these as they were Johnson's as this is a trusted product for babies that most people seem to use!
It comes in a light purple bottle and so it makes it easier to find on the shelves. It has a flip top which when pressed down is nice and secure so if knocked over it won't spill. However I find when applying the lotion sometimes the bottle will get a bit slippery and so it can be hard to open the flip lid as when down its quite stiff to open back up.
The lotion is white in colour and is a good consistency, quite thick but it rubs into the skin really well. My little boy loves the lotion being rubbed into him and it really does seem to help him relax before bed. It has a lovely smell to it, the classic Johnson's baby smell but has a very mild hint of lavender which is gorgeous. The lotion absorbs well and what I also like is that it doesn't leave any greasiness behind so his pyjamas can be put straight on.
I would say this helped him sleep better, as the lotion seems to calm my boy down and he also knows when this is applied its bedtime. Because of this I would recommend it!
Johnson's are one of those brands that everyone approves off. Be it my grandma, my mum or the other mums at school, Johnson's is the old reliable and this is a chip off the old block.
If you have read my reviews before you know I have 3 children and the 2 youngest have been treated to bedtime bath and lotion since they were born. The Purple bottle is easily identifiable on the shelves and you can always find it on offer on a 3 for 2 or a BOGOF which helps save the pennies.
Bedtime bath is designed to help Babies get ready for a full nights sleep due to a patented blend of aromas to help calm your child down. It is , like all Johnson's products, clinically proven to be mild to babies skin and is suitable for sensitive skin as well.
The cream is a lovely consistency not too thick or runny and when you rub it into either your children's skin or your own, this cream is very easily absorbed and it doesn't leave a residue. It also leaves the most amazing smell on the skin that isn't overwhelming. My daughter at the age of 2 has her bath and gets moisturised, she then proceeds to put some on her hands and rub it in before sniffing them and proclaiming "nice" every time. The smell certainly has lavender in it but because it is mixed with other things it is very subtle(I actually hate lavender normally).
Now even though I have used this on and off for 2 years, I am not going to say it's a guaranteed full night's sleep just because you use it. What I will say is that when incorporated into a bedtime routine , this does help relax your children ready for bed and, as a added bonus, when I am giving my son his feed before I put him down, the lovely aroma's emanating from him are just an added pleasure.
Every Mum should try this, the smell, texture, consistency are wonderful and it's great on my skin too!!
I have been using the Johnson's bedtime bath since my daughter was born as it relaxes her and I have noticed she has a better sleep afterwards.
I hadn't needed to buy any baby products since my daughter was born as I recieved so many things as gifts. However when the bubble bath run out and I went to the supermarket I was delighted to see that there was a bed time lotion, wash, baby oil and talc.
The lotion comes in a 300ml bottle and costs £2.55 in Tesco. You can also get it in Asda and Boots. The lotion comes in a bottle the same shape as the normal Johnson's lotion but rather than being pink it is see through and you can see the pale purple lotion through the bottle.
The bottle states that the lotion has NaturalCalm aromas, is proven to help your baby sleep better and has clinically proven mildness. The lotion is dermatologically tested and is paraben free.
To use the lotion you simply apply to your baby's skin after bathing them. Johnson's do recommend you use the bubble bath first.
The lotion has a lovely consistency when it comes out of the bottle, it isn't too thick so it makes it perferct for baby massage. The lotion has a lovely smell which is one of my favourite Johnson's smell, it is a mixture of lavender and camomile. The lotion absorbed really well into my daughters skin, it dried almost immediately and afterwards it left her skin soft and smooth. I noticed that my daughters skin smelt of the lotion for a few hours after use.
I have been using this lotion for about a month now. I definately think that it helps my daughter relax. Baby massage is also a great way of bonding with her. I would recommend this in place of the normal Johnson's lotion as it smells nicer and is a great way of preparing your baby for bed.
As many of you who read my reviews will know I have a 23 month old little boy, A TODDLER! I use a lot of different baby products as I can not resist a bargain, if I see a baby product on offer I buy and try it.
My latest attempt at getting my little boy to sleep through the night was to try baby massage, so when I saw Johnsons baby bedtime lotion on offer in my local sainsburys I decided to give it a go.
The bottle is the usual Johnsons baby lotion shape but instead of pink it is a lovely lilac and white, it has the clinically proven mildness stamp and states that it is proven to help your baby sleep better with natural calm aromas. It sounded perfect!
I decided to include it in my babies bed time routine, so after his usual bath I laid him down on a warm towel and starting with his tummy arms and legs I began massaging him, the smell is beautiful, not overpowering in any way just a gentle lavender type smell, Jamie loved it, he turned over and stuck his bottom in the air for my to massage his back. This soon became a regular part of his bed time routine with him climbing on to the bed laying on his tummy and asking for his 'nice' that is what he calls it! The lotion soon soaks in and does not leave any residue on babies skin, also it is very gentle and we have had no reaction to it.
I cant say it has actually helped him sleep through the night in fact I really dont think it has, but it is a nice part of his bedtime routine, a special mummy and baby time, it definately does help him chill out a little though. I would recommend it to all mums with active restless toddlers, try it, even if it does not send them to sleep it is a lovely bonding time.
I recently reviewed the Johnson's baby shampoo and the one I am reviewing today is the Johnson's bedtime lotion, and I bought it to use on my grandsons skin as my daughter told me she uses it for him since he had been teething and he recently came to sleep at my home and so I thought I would buy some and use it before he went to bed, and since he was used to it, I thought I would continue the routine at my home.
It comes in a plastic bottle with a flip top, when it is opened the smell of the Lavender is very apparent and it smells absolutely beautiful, I really liked it, and the texture of the lotion is extremely smooth and soft to the touch and only a small amount is needed into the palms of the hands, and to massage the baby's body with it nice and gently and it is a very soothing and calming fragrance, it is beautifully soft on the skin and it is also kind to my hands when I have used it on my grandson.
When I first tried this lotion when my grandson came to sleep over, I thought I would lay him down on the bed after his bath and he would enjoy it as he was used to it at home, but when I started to massage it into his skin he began to giggle and laugh and thought I was playing a game with him lol, he could not stop laughing as his grandma was struggling to do the task at first lol, and we had such a good laugh and fun, we both enjoyed it lol, he thought I was tickling him lol, so it is not just for massaging it is a good product to interact with a child, a parent or grandparent or any other person who is using this on a child.
This lotion has a very nice calming effect when applying it, the smell is very relaxing and I can see why it is called a bedtime lotion, because used at bedtime after a bath, when a child is all relaxed it is very good because of the aroma from the lavender and the massaging on the body and the two together is super to relax a baby at bedtime.
This lotion I bought from Sainsbury's for £2.50 for 300ml, it is often on special offer but when I bought this one, I had to pay the original price and it is worth the price in my opinion and only a little is needed and it absorbs nicely into the skin and moisturises it to make it beautifully soft too, my grandson particularly likes it rubbed into his back and tummy areas, he eventually laid still after our fun and games lol and he allowed me to rub it into his skin and he was sleepy after I had applied it and I read him a bedtime story with my hubby and he went to sleep and slept all night and his skin felt so soft after applying it as the quality is amazingly good.
I recommend this lotion for any parent or grandparent to try for their babies as I think it is a very nice smelling lotion and it is nice on a baby's skin and I recommend it for a good time laughing with your child or grandchild like I did lol.
I give it 5 stars.
Thank you for reading my review.
I have used this product since my two year old was a newborn and I must say it is fantastic. It helps put her to sleep after bathtime and smells so relaxing.
My little girl loves it and I think it really calms her down in time for bed and when she was much younger she used to fall asleep as I was massaging her. It seems to have a lavender quality that sends babies into a deep sleep. Good for baby and mommy!
It can be very cheap also. There always seems to be a "buy one get one free offer" available in large shopping departments. Its good value as the bottle lasts for a good few weeks.
It also encourages routine into the childs life as after every bath you can massage them and get them ready for bed. It seems to have a more relaxing effect because the baby knows its time to wind down and relax for the night. Definitely helped my girl to sleep through the night. I would recommend using this on young babies as a result.
I also use the Johnsons bedtime bath which can be added to the bath water. The two together really work a treat and will have your child smelling lovely too!
Johnsons Bedtime Lotion
This has got to be one of them products that you never get sick of using! I first used Johnsons Bedtime Lotion when I was going through the phase of seeking out products that would help my baby to sleep more. I bought the Johnsons Bedtime Bath and some Goodnight Milk and then spotted this on offer for £2.00 with the rest of the Bedtime Range. I had a little read of it and spotted that it was for giving your child a relaxing massage and remembered someone telling me that they used to do that for their child and so I thought that I had nothing to lose and why not.
First impressions of the bottle are the feeling of familiarality and reassurance. The bottle is the standard smooth, oval shaped Johnsons bottle that they use on a majority of their products. It is lilac in colour, the same as the rest of the 'Bedtime' range and has a darker lilac flip cap. On the front of the bottle is the blue Johnsons logo, product title and information and a picture of an asleep baby looking all snuggly and warm in bed with the statement that it is 'proven to help baby sleep better', which is true!!
The lotion itself is is rather thin (compared to other Johnsons products) and also quite greasy, which I suppose is an advantage when you are using it as a massage aid as it diesn't dry on sticky. It is mild and gentle with a lovely aroma of faded lavender. I use this lotion on my daughter every night and find that it never dry's out my hand or leaves any irritations, if anything I have felt that my hand seem smother and more silky soft!
I have found that using this range as part of you bedtime routine not only gives your child relaxation but also a feeling of familiarality as the smell is rather distinctive. Personally, I accompany this with Johnsons Bedtime Bath, Johnsons Bedtime Talc and A warm rusk bottle (used to be Cow and Gate Goodnight Milk but they discontinued it around 6 weeks ago) and find that it settles my daughter contentedly and works an absolute treat.
Johnsons Bedtime Lotion can be purchaced in 200ml bottles for around £2.00 and £500ml bottles for around £4.00 but are sometimes cheaper in Tesco's as they tend to have the whole range on offer for £2.00 (the larger sized bottles) and sometimes in ASDA during the baby event.
I would highly recommend this product to any mother or father as it encourages relaxation, routine and a comforting natural sleep.
When my mom first had Alfie her friends put together a bit basket with loads of baby products and clothes in it for both of them and this "Johnsons Bedtime Lotion" was one of those products. She also got the bubble bath and the body wash so Alfie would get the full benefits by using all of the range. She has been using it on him since he was born and hes now just over 3 months old so it is a great product for not only new borns but its great for babies while they are growing as my mom thinks Alfie has realised this is now part of his bedtime routine and that when she applies it its time for bed.
This product comes in a light lavender coloured bottle with an easy to use flip lid which makes it very easy to open and shut when you have a wriggly and sometimes crying baby in the other hand. You dont need much of this lotion at any one time as otherwise I think if you use to much it would make your babies skin a bit clogged and greasy and in turn that would keep them awake - it would with me anyway. Its best to use this when you have just given your baby a bath as then the effects of all the "bedtime" range will work their magic. As this contains lavender and camomile is is meant to sooth and calm your baby before bedtime making it easier for them (and you!) to drift of to sleep.
Before I even start saying how well this works I have to mention the smell. It is lovely so nice I would actually use it for myself hehe. I was puzzled though because it doesnt really smell like lavender or camomile in my opinion. On the front of the bottle we have it says that this now contains Jojoba oil so that must be what gives it most of the scent because you only get a slight afterscent of lavender. Its enough to put me to sleep!
I just had to ask my mom whether or not she thought this helped to put Alfie to sleep and her opinion was sort of. She reckons that instead of the scent helping him to sleep he just realises than when she is putting this on him it is nearly time for bed so its more the routine than anything. I reckon the smell of this could put me to sleep though! This sinks into your babys skin so quickly leaving it...well as smooth as a babies I guess. I fully recommend this as I reckon adults will probably be stealing some of this away for themselves and if it does help you baby to get to sleep its worth any amount of money right?!
I think a bottle of this will set you back just under £3 and it can be bought from most supermarkets so I think thats great value for money as this is great for parents and babies.
Thanks For Reading

This is my favourite baby product and the one that I use the most!
I originally bought it to use as part of my sons bedtime routine, but after using it just once I was hooked!
My poor little fella now endures 'bedtime lotion' moisturising sessions at all times of the day!.... the smell is just gorgeous!
Ive even jumped on the band wagon and use it on me too!
For a 300ml bottle it cost me £2.49 but quite often it is half price as part of the baby events that many supermarkets hold.
Some own brands have bought out their own bedtime version but they are not even half as good as the Johnsons one.
The lotion is clinically proven to help babies sleep better, thanks to the naturalcalm blend of relaxing aromas.
You are directed to use it after a warm bath (which probably also makes your baby calmer and more inclined to sleep anyway) massaging it gently into the skin.
How effective it is at making them sleep better, I dont know as I have been fortunate to have a baby that sleeps well anyway but it certainly does have a calming, soothing fragrance and it is a product that I use everyday as part of his routine.
This lotion is very mild and suitable for sensitive skin.
It works just like a normal moisturiser and is a very good one at that, absorbing easily into the skin leaving babys (and my) skin silky soft, but it really is the scent that sells it for me!
This product comes as part of a wider bedtime range but in my opinion this is the best of them all!
I bought the Johnsons bedtime Lotion in conjunction with the Johnsons Bedtime Bath. I use a few drops of the Bedtime Bath every time I bath my son and then when he gets out I use the Bedtime Lotion, which is aimed at getting the baby to sleep quicker and putting the baby into a deeper sleep. It feels just like the normal Johnsons Baby lotion, it goes on smoothly and it also absorbs quite quickly. I do not know whether it is the Johnsons Bedtime products I use that get my son off to sleep, but ever since he has been a few weeks old, he has slept all through the night. I have recently attended Baby Massage classes with my son and I used the Johnsons Bedtime lotion at the massage classes, as it leaves his skin soft and really seems to relax him. You only need to use a little bit and it lasts for ages.
To help your baby sleep better at night, gently massage Johnson's Bedtime Lotion over your baby's entire body as a part of her nightly routine. The calming aromas and your soothing touch will relax your baby for bed.
