Advantages: Lots of uses, good quality

Disadvantages: More expensive

Cotton buds have always been a staple in my household, and Johnson's are some of the best. I didn't actually request this product go in the Baby category - personally it would have been more useful under some kind of health and beauty heading, since that's what I use cotton buds for.

Johnson's cotton buds are generally small blue plastic sticks with a bit of cotton on each end. They come packaged in handy, easy use lidded tubs. This has the advantage of being easily stored - I hate it when you spill them everywhere!

Ear cleaning, though not recommended, is one of my main uses for them. Obviously you have to be very careful and I find it helps to wet them under the tap a little first.

It's recommended that you don't insert them into the ear canal with the danger that it could potentially make you go deaf. For this reason if you're using them in this way for your baby you should be exceptionally careful so as not to cause discomfort or lasting damage.

Cotton buds are also good for applying and removing makeup. They are much cheaper alternative to eyeshadow applicators, and they are also good when wet to remove little bits of makeup you've smudged on your face. Removing mascara than has applied itself to the skin just under your eye is good for this. So in this way cotton buds can be a real and easy time saver.

If you're a parent, this will make them doubly useful to you as you can use them on baby and yourself - just like Johnson's Baby Oil.

Johnson's cotton buds are great quality, which is very important, as it is not pleasant and even dangerous if the ends unravel or remove easily. However, I have recently discovered that Tesco do some great packs in square plastic boxes that cost only 28p and are of similar quality. So unfortunately I won't be buying Johnson's for the moment!

Summary: A bathroom essential
