Advantages: Don't shed their fibres, comfortable to hold, good storage drum
Disadvantages: ----------
I'd never had the need to buy cotton buds until around eight years ago when my beloved rottweiler had an unsuccessful operation to remove a tumour, she was left in immense pain from a semi-open wound in her abdomen which needed to be kept scrupulously clean. She was left like this as it wasn't immediately apparent as to whether the operation had been successful or not, and it was the vet who suggested I buy Johnson's Cotton Buds to clean around the area without causing Razzle too much extra pain. I must admit she was a very brave girl, to my great sadness she died not long afterwards as it turned out a second tumour had gone unnoticed.
Razzle may have passed on, but my penchant for buying Johnson's Cotton Buds has remained with me ever since. I have tried other brands over the years but always return to these as they are quite simply the best,
For a start the 100% cotton buds do not shed any fibres whatsoever, in fact it's hard to even pull the bud off the stick even if I put effort into it so I'm confident there are going to be no loose bits sticking to wherever I'm using the bud. These are ideal for cleaning the visible part of the ear, although you mustn't poke them into the ear canal as this can cause damage. For this reason I always wait for my granddaughter to go into a deep sleep before cleaning her ears with cotton buds, and likewise if you're using them to clean the inside of an animals ear then it's imperative you wait for them to be in a calm mood and dab away with the cotton bud rather than poking and rubbing with it.
I also find Johnson's Cotton Buds ideal for neatening up my nails, I am not the most confident manicurist so tend to paint my fingers as well as my nails but dipping a cotton bud into a little nail varnish remover is perfect as I can control the bud and just remove the messy varnish on my skin rather than having to contend with a larger cotton wool pad. My daughter swears by them for applying her eye make-up as the fact they don't shed means she doesn't make a mess of her eyeshadow, she also tells me she uses them damp to apply eyeshadow as an eyeliner - which I'm sure will mean more to you young things than it does to me!
The uses are endless, they really are. I have merely scratched the surface above but these cotton buds come in useful for health and hygiene reasons, beauty and baby care and even cleaning stubborn spots on my kitchen work surface when more than a wipe is needed but there is no reason to bleach the whole area.
The great thing about these Johnson's Cotton Buds is that they come packaged in a rigid cardboard tub rather than a plastic drawstring bag like most of the cheaper ones. The pot also has a plastic lid which fits snugly and means my cotton buds are kept in a clean and dust free environment whenever I'm not using them.
Johnson's Cotton Buds cost just £1.42 for 200 from Boots, which is an absolute bargain as you're only spending an extra 42p compared to buying a cheaper brand in Poundland and the difference in quality is absolutely astounding.
Summary: Don't bother with the cheaper brands, these are the best.

- 12/03/09 Ive never found a more complete cotton bud than J & J. All the cheap ones fall apart or snap. I also use them to get the dust out of in between the springs and mechanism on my saxophones. |
