Advantages: Works quickly
Disadvantages: Greasy , sometimes baby doesn't like taste
My daughter and I took a few weeks to get used to breastfeeding. She would latch on fine and would drink without problems. Then she would fall asleep and slide off the nipple. As she seemed like she was constantly feeding I used to leave her one the breast for five minutes to make sure she had finished her feed but more often than not she would wake up and snap at the nipple and end up feeding from the tip and not the breast. About 36 hours after she was born I became aware of an uncomfortable, itchy feeling in my nipples and was amazed to see that they were bright red and almost raw. My midwife suggested getting a camomile cream as I was getting to the point where I was in excruitiating pain every time I fed and my nipples were cracked and bleeding. I sent my partner to get some and was impressed to say the least when he actually came back with not only the right thing but apparently the best on the market. I have my suspicions that he asked someone what to get or made them get it for him. I fed my daughter and then spread a tiny ammount on my nipples and sat in the hospital bed with my boobs out. They immediatley felt better and feeding was marginally better. I thought that she was ok with the taste until one night when I was feeding her she spat a huge ammount of liquid at me and it was yellow and smelt of camomile. I carried on using the ointment but made sure it was all off every time she wanted feeding. In the end I resorted to nipple shields (seperate op) as my nipples became scaby and I didn't want her feeding on scabs. The kamillosan definetley worked and would have been all that was needed had I not been breastfeeding. Kamillosan can be used for treating sore skin conditions like nappy rash and chapped hands. I used the cream on my daughters hands when they became sore from where she sucked them and it soon made the skin soft again and I found that applying it when she was asleep gave it time to soak in and I neve
r saw any effects from the cream if she decided to suck her hands without my knowledge. I remember being in hospital and one of the midwifes coming round asking if any one had some kamillosan they could spare as there was another mother who had sore nipples but couldn't get any. I felt glad that I could help someone else. Kamillosan is a smooth, gel like substance that smells quite strong and is quite greasy to the touch.
