I decided to use reusable nappies before my daughter was born so started to look round at all the alternatives when I was 5 months pregnant. I was astonished at just how many different types there were, from plain old terries to super duper looking ones. Unfortunately my daughter took me by surprise and came 6 weeks early so I didn't have any ready to try when she was born. As it was I found out when she came out of hospital a lot of them don't cater for the smaller baby. I must confess I haven't used these reusable nappies exclusively, but as often as possible. I use a disposable for the overnight stretch, and if I'm going out anywhere I use disposables rather than lug dirty nappies around. Saying that, it's just sheer laziness that makes me do that, it would be no great hardship to use Kooshies in either of these situations. They are preshaped and fasten with velcro. There is an internal flap that you fold differently for boys or girls, and they have a waterproof outer. You need to change them more often than disposables, but that's about the only drawback.
