Advantages: It works fast

Disadvantages: Quite pricey for the size of tube

I have five 'babies' (OK, they range from 20 months to 16 years but they'll always be my babies, even when they have babies of their own) and until Littlest HonestBob's arrival nappy rash has been a welcome absentee from my life. When I had my first babies I used to smother their bottoms in a thick white layer of nappy cream, however, after having Littlest HonestBob my midwife advised me against doing this, saying that modern nappies do not work as well if alot of cream is used, hence I do not use cream as a barrier as I did previously.

Maybe it's modern disposable nappies and the gels that they contain, maybe it's a difference in diet or maybe it's genetic (Littlest HonestBob does have a different Daddy to all the others and he has more sensitive skin than my ex), whatever the cause, Littlest HonestBob occasionally suffers from nappy rash. His little bum gets very red, is clearly sore and sometimes develops open sores which bleed and cause lots of tears. It's horrid for him and I feel like a terrible mummy, no matter how often I change his nappy or how quickly I get to him after he's produced a 'gift' (!)

My usual standby, Sudocreme, has been completely unsuccessful in alleviating his pain. Bepanthen was recommended, but did little more than Sudocreme had managed, then a friend recommended Metanium.

This cream is available for £3.56 from Boots and comes in a light yellow 30g tube packaged in a light yellow cardboard box with purple text stating the product name and "Nappy Rash Ointment. Sooth's and Treats Your Baby's Nappy Rash". The rear of the tube gives instructions for use. Basically you should dab a small amount (pea size) of the cream to the sore area on a clean bottom. The cream should be applied thinly so that the texture of the skin can be seen. Application should be stopped if skin irritation (rare) occurs.

I saw a definite improvement after my first use of this cream on Littlest HonestBob's nappy rash. The redness was significantly reduced, the skin dry and his open sores reduced. The cream adheres to the open sores and protects them from further exposure to urine and faeces. After 36 hours of use his bottom was back to normal.

I now keep several tubes of this cream in layette boxes around the house, my changing bag and at nursery. I don't bother with other creams apart from the occasional preventative use of sudocreme when he is teething. I can't recommend Metanium for nappy rash highly enough.

Summary: Keep a tube handy to stem the tears
