Advantages: Clears nappy rash up within 3 days and eases the redness within a few hours.

Disadvantages: Marks clothing!

My son is teething at the moment and is suffering with quite bad nappy rash, usually Sudocrem works really well at clearing it up, but not this time. A friend of mine recommended a cream called Metanium, so I decided to try this out. I purchased a 30g tube from my local Lloyds pharmacy for the price of £3.48.

The box itself is yellow in colour and has a picture of a baby on the front with the name Metanium printed at the side of the baby. It states underneath that it is nappy rash ointment and that it soothes and treats your baby's nappy rash. On the back it states that it is a topical ointment, which rubs easily into the skin to treat nappy rash. The tube itself is also yellow with a white, screw on lid.

The instructions for use are as follows; you must clean and dry the affected area with a soft cloth and towel. (I usually use baby wipes on my sons bum but when he has nappy rash these irritate him, therefore I tend to use plain cotton wool and water when his nappy rash is severe.) After washing your hands apply a pea sized amount onto your finger tip and rub over the sore area. It is important that you spread the cream thinly so that the skin texture can be seen through the cream. It also advises that you should repeat the process at each nappy rash.

The first thing I noticed about the cream once I opened it was the very strong smell it has. It isnt an unpleasant smell but smells very medical, a bit like the antiseptic smell you get in hospitals. The cream is very thick and is yellow in colour.

Because it is thick I thought it would be difficult to apply so I put a little bit too much on the first time I applied it, a little does go a very, very long way and you literally need a small, pea sized amount to treat the bum area. It rubs in very easily and forms a very thick layer over the affected area.

Each time you change the nappy, you can still see the remains there and it does take a good wash to remove the remains from your baby's bum!! The cream also marks clothes and other material items, so please take care when you are applying it!!

I am greatly impressed with this cream, after just one application I saw a definite improvement to the soreness and redness of my sons bum and after three days of using it the rash had completely cleared up. So I will be throwing Sudocrem out of my changing bag and using Metanium from now on!!

Summary: A must have for every nappy bag!

I used this on my daughter cos sudocrem made her rash worse. but i always used to forget to replace the lid and would end up with yellow snakes as the cream just kept oozing out...

We got this free on prescription from the health visitor but found sudocrem to be more effective for our little one.
