Mothercare Bath Set
Advantages: cheap, various colours
Disadvantages: necessary? bad sponge and towel
Our daughter was our first baby, and being novices not used to babyhood we bought pretty much everything Mothercare stocked.
One of the things we bought was this bath set. To be honest we only chose this one because the pink was out of stock. It cost £32.99 from our local Mothercare. This is quite cheap because included is not only the bath, but a hooded towel, thermometer, top & tail bowl and a sponge. The set comes in blue, cream, lemon or pink. It matches a lot of their other stuff like boxes, bedding, potty etc. so you can coordinate your nursery.
The bath has a cute teddy picture on which is the theme of the set. It has a unique 'non spill' flexi handle to reduce sploshing when you carry it around. The bath has a plug which makes it easy to empty after use. It also has a removable soap dish - I never really bothered with this though to be honest, but I did find it useful to help wash my daughter's hair! The bath itself is fairly tough and rigid, certainly not flimsy. It holds a decent amount of water - more than enough to bath a baby from newborn onwards. I found the bath quite light and easy to carry - a blessing when it is full of water! It was also easy to empty and sturdy enough that I wasn't worried it'd crack or split (I've been paranoid about this ever since my best friend told me her cheap baby bath cracked - eek!)
The top & tail bowl is again the same colour with the same design. There are two big sections - one has a picture of a baby's face and the other has a picture of the baby's bottom. In the middle is a much smaller section which I suppose is meant for the used cotton wool. I got a lot of use out of the top & tail when my daughter was little, and although I can see how handy it is having the pictures on the bowl so you don't mix up the cotton wool, it's not something I needed.
The thermometer is a good idea and very reassuring for new mums like me. You hold it into the water for 15 seconds and then take it out. It will display a green tick if the temperature is just right, a red plus if it is too hot and a green minus if it is too cold. I double checked it with another thermometer to be sure and it seemed to be accurate, about as accurate as you can expect! I always make sure I mix the water round thoroughly first to avoid any hot or cold spots. I used the thermometer for as long as I used the bath, and then when she went into the adult bath we had a heat sensitive mat and a different thermometer so we gave the Mothercare one to a friend.
The set also comes with a white hooded towel with a picture of the teddy on. The towel is quite large, certainly big enough to wrap a baby up nice and warm. I would say the towel would last into the toddler years as it is so big! Having said that, it did not wash that well and I found that after a couple of months it was too rough for my daughter's delicate skin, so I ended up buying more from a different place. The same can be said for the sponge - I never actually used this on my daughter because the moment I picked it up I was appalled at how abrasive it is. I certainly would not use this on a delicate newborn! As a result the sponge went straight into the bin without ever being used - a big disappointment from a leading baby store!
The bath set is perfectly adequate and makes a lovely gift. If you need a bath, then this is one I would choose.
However I must point out that I didn't use the bath for long, simply because it was too awkward trying to hold the baby and wash her with only one pair of hands. I think we only used the bath for a couple of months or so before we bought a bath seat that fit into the adult bath - thus freeing up my hands!
If you want or need a baby bath then this one is fab - but if I were to have another baby, I don't think I'd buy another baby bath.
Summary: good if you need one!
