I've decided that it really is time my son was potty trained. He does show an interest sometimes in using the potty but doesn't seem to be making significant progress. Bulk Standard Potty. This one has been around the house for about 12 months now. If he's running around naked after his bath he will quite happily wee into it, but that's about as far as it goes. He won't sit on it, preferring to stand across it, which is fine but means that he won't learn to do a poo in it. This potty is suitable for both boys and girls and is very easy to clean. It costs about £5.00. Disadvantage - doesn't look too comfortable. Toilet Seat Potty. This helps progress your child from an ordinary potty to using the toilet. You lift the toilet seat, place the potty on the bowl of the toilet and then put the seat back down again. It means that the child can use the proper toilet without falling in!! This one (at the moment) has proved to be a spectacular disaster, with my son refusing to go anywhere near it. But I'm sure for those who have mastered using the potty this will give them the added security needed for transferring to using the proper toilet. Again, suitable for boys and girls and easy to clean. It costs about £6.00. Disadvantage - Probably too soon to try this one. Potty Chair. I think that this could be the one!! Everytime we go into Mothercare my son rushes up to this one, drags it onto the floor and promptly sits on it! So I finally gave in and bought it. It's like a curved semi-circular chair which has a lift out potty in it. It has back and side support and as it's higher than normal potties (I should think at least twice as tall), it gives a natural and comfortable sitting position. The potty itself is a good depth and is easily removable for disposal and cleaning, and as with the other potties I mentioned it has a splashguard so is sui
table for boys and girls. It also has rubber feet to stop any movement, making it very sturdy. The main thing I like about it is that my son cannot stand astride it to have a wee, he has to sit down, which I'm hoping will encourage him to do a poo in it as well. This one costs £10. Disadvantage - Haven't come across one yet. All of these potties I have mentioned are the ordinary bulk standard Mothercare ones, i.e. white with either the ABC motif or the Cat/Dog motif. Of course they also do the Winnie the Pooh design and for those you need to add on an extra pound or two to the prices I've quoted. Happy training!!

- 12/01/04 I liked your review, but I reckon it could have been better if you'd have given us an idea of how old your son was/is when you were potty training. I'd have found that more useful, as my little girl has the basic potty from Mothercare and refuses to go near it. |
