Advantages: keeps nappy on baby
Disadvantages: may pierce baby skin if not careful
I just discovered you can still buy nappy pins mother care do a pack of 12 for £1.99p
I still have 2 nappy pins that I used to keep my daughters nappy up 27 yrs ago.
So what is a nappy pin I hear you young things ask the nappies most of you use are disposable nappies with sticky closures.
Well my dears a nappy pin in case you did not know is a pin used to hold babies nappy on. It is like a large safety pin but has an extra safety catch so that the nappy pin does not come undone.
A nappy pin is usually made of stainless steel so it will not rust.
How to use a nappy pin!!
If you are using a traditional square nappy first you will need to fold your nappy there are several ways to do this.
My favourite way is the kite fold
Lay nappy flat. Imagine a line from top left to bottom right corner
Fold bottom left and the top right corner to meet this line.
Fold the top corner down towards bottom right.
Now fold the bottom corner up as far as you need this fold is adjusted to baby’s size.
Now place baby on the nappy narrow bit under his /her legs
Pull the bottom corner through babies legs
Pull the side points across babies tummy
Place two of your fingers under the fabric by babies tummy. Insert the nappy pin through the fabric point away from baby, no need to pin baby to nappy, with practice you will be able to put on nappy securely.
There are other ways to put on nappies but this one I liked best for Sally.
Do be careful you do not prick babies skin, remember put your fingers between nappy and babies skin .My husband a new dad Pierced Sallys tummy once he has never lived it down, poor Sally. Modern day nappy fasteners called napi nippers are much safer plastic catches, no risk of piercing babies naval.
If you wish to use real nappies At least some of the time the new prefolds are good ready shaped to fit babies bum all you need to do is use a pin to keep it together
Nappy pins can come with the safety shield in white or blue or pink, I guess the blue ones for boys the pink for girls. Blue or pink ones in a pack of 4 cost £1.25 from kiddicarehttp://media.venda.com/kiddicare/ebiz/kid dicare/invt/xdlnappinblue/ cost for pink ones and white.
In recent years there has been a new nappy fastener a nappi nipper these are really good no pierced tummy buttons for babies if you use these. They are a plastic stretchy hook cost about £1.30p each.
I have seen christening charms of nappy pins made from real silver these are at http://www.zoojewellery.com/pink-nappy-pin-charm.h tm cost £7.99.
The safety clasp is either blue or pink.
Large adult nappy pins are also available from some sites; some of them might be more suitable for that new category that is been discussed on dooyoo.
I hope if you are a new mum / dad reading this you will give non dispoasable
Nappies a try and I would recommend using a nappi nippa really but good old fashioned pins are good and do not be worried about them coming undone to prick baby as they have the safety catch, I have changed 100000000 of nappies with pins and never had this happen to me . Thanks for the read Mary
Summary: good way of pinning nappy together

- 30/01/06 Great review, My mum always tells me about the first time she put a terry nappy on my brother and she picked him up and it fell off. My brother is just about to become a dad and is going to use proper nappies. Gayna x |
