Advantages: Good for environment, all natural, not too expensive

Disadvantages: Nappies can burst if too full, goes solid when full

I will be honest, and say I never considered using environmentally friendly nappies when my son was born, I didn't know much about them and I wanted to make my life as easy as possible. But I received a voucher for a packet of Nature Babycare nappies about 2 months ago, and I decided that I would give them a go and see what I thought.

*The Company*
Nature Babycare nappies are produced by a Swedish company, and were the brain child of a mum who wanted to do more for the environment after finding out how bad disposable nappies are for the planet. Marlene Sandberg invented a nappy which keeps your child dry and happy, and which contains a Swedish invention which is made with a compostable biological maize film that breathes and is therefore still nicer for your baby.

*Nappies*
Nature Babycare nappies come in almost as many sizes as bigger brand nappies such as Pampers and Huggies offer. They are:
Newborn: Size 1, 2-5kg (4-11lbs) - 28 nappies in a pack
Mini: Size 2, 3-6kg (6-13lbs) - 44 nappies
Midi: Size 3, 4-9kg (9-20lbs) - 38 nappies
Maxi: Size 4, 7-18kg (15-40lbs) - 34 nappies
Maxi Plus: Size 4+, 9-20kg (20-44lbs) - 32 nappies
Junior: Size 5, 11-25kg (24-55lbs) - 30 nappies.

Each nappy is white in colour, and has small green leaves dotted all over the body of the nappy. They feel very soft, and the "surface of each nappy is covered with a natural tree pulp tissue and a film based on GM free 100% natural maize, which lets your baby's skin breathe naturally" (taken from the website). It feels nice and soft and natural, compared to other nappy brands which do feel a bit synthetic to the touch.

The leg cuffs are highly elasticated which is very good and tight around my son's legs. The waistband is also elasticated at the tummy, and at the back, so you can ensure that you get a snug fit around your child to prevent leakages, and accidents. The tabs at the side are well attached, and I have not yet had any tear away or come off of the nappy which is very good. They are not elasticated at these parts unlike other nappies I use which makes it slightly harder to tighten, but I just pull them round as far as they will go and stick them to the waistband. This is a good fastening, and again I have not had any problems with the waistband coming unattached or apart.

The inside of the nappy where your child's wee and poo goes is very soft, and again all natural. As described earlier it is made of pulp and is completely natural. I have not had Harry come up in any rashes or anything since I have used these nappies, which was a concern of mine. I have been impressed with these but unfortunately there is a negative to these nappies which I feel I should add to this review in order to make it a complete review.

The other problem is the burst nappies. On the occasion where I haven't seen his nappy get huge i.e. in his afternoon nap, the nappy has actually burst. This has left the crystals from inside the nappy all over his bedroom floor, in his cot and inside his clothing. The inside lining of the nappy has torn and been unable to cope with the amount of liquid which I think is quite a shame.

I do still use the nappies despite these couple of hiccups I have come across because I do feel I should be doing my bit for the environment, especially because I have used disposable nappies for such a long time. I just make sure to feel the nappy regularly and check that it isn't getting too full so we don't have another explosion! They are good for my son's skin though as he doesn't get any rashes from the nappy and the leg cuffs and waistband and nice and soft and flexible enough to move with him.

The nappies are also sold at a reasonable price, which is good as they are not pricing themselves out of the market. A packet of newborn nappies costs £3.75 and all other sizes cost £5.98. It is not all that easy to get hold of these nappies however. My 2 local supermarkets, Sainsburys and Tescos do not sell them, but my small Boots store in town does, yet the huge out of town store doesn't! It is just worth checking the shelves of your local shops to see where they are sold.

I would recommend giving them a go. They are better for your baby as they are all natural, and better for the environment as they rot down. A good nappy, although I would not use them during the night because of the problems I have had with their absorbtion.

A brand of nappies that I have not tried yet. I was surprised how competitively priced they are. Nessie :)
