Advantages: Help the environment, kind to skin

Disadvantages: Go into regular landfill so debatably eco-friendly

Keen to do our little bit for the environment, we decided to give these 'eco-friendly' nappies a go when our daughter was born.

I expected them to be a lot more expensive than the usual nappy brands, and was surprised to find that there is actually little difference in price. However, brands such as Pampers and Huggies tend to have regular offers on, so overall you would end up spending a bit more on these nappies.

We had a selection of various brands of nappies when our daughter was newborn, which meant I could directly compare them. I found we had the odd leak with every brand, and no more with the Nature nappies.

We had no problems with sore bums or nappy rash while using them, and have now moved over to using reuseables. We do however need disposables now and again (going on holiday for example) and so bought some more Nature nappies in a bigger size. Again, we have had no real problems when using them, although the size 3s are a bit on the large size but we couldn't find any size 2s.

We use them with Nature biodegradeable bags and wipes, but I was disappointed to learn that if they go into landfill along with regular household waste then the are no faster to decompose than regular nappies.

So unless you are able to compost your nappies at home then you aren't really making any difference to landfills and the environment. Some councils will take them with garden waste so they can decompose proberly which would make them worthwhile. However, they are made with less chemicals etc so may be kinder on your baby's bottom.

Summary: Definitely worthwhile if you can compost them yourself
