Advantages: Biodegradable, Compostable, Unperfumed

Disadvantages: Expensive, can't open with 1 hand

Before I started using cloth nappies, I was gradually trying to become more eco-friendly. I started making small changes to the household to do my little bit towards the environment. I always used nappy sacks to dispose of the yukky disposables and really wanted to use something more natural. It seems to me that Nature bio nappy bags are the only biodegradable nappy sacks on the market.

They come in boxes of 50 and are expensive compared to other brands especially if you buy thousands in the pound shop. However, you can be a be nicer to yourself and feel less guilty that your contributing to the landfill sites. Nature nappy bags claim to be totally biodegradable and compostable, based on natural GM-free cornstarch. They are unperfumed but to be honest, I always found the perfumed ones quite unpleasant. These nappy bags have a very strange feel to them. They seem really thin and fragile but are in fact, very tough and stretchy. I used to put 2 or 3 nappies in them to throw them before throwing them away. I can't seem to open these bags with one hand, so you have to be quite dexterous while holding a wriggling baby - the answer is get yourself ready beforehand!

These sacks are only really going to be effective if you do your own composting but can't see many people burning their nappies in the back garden. I much prefer using my cloth nappies which do not require throwing anything away. But on the rare occasion, I use a disposable at least its a small effort to save the environment.
