Advantages: Uses less water
Disadvantages: Tricky to get a good hold on baby
Like all first time parents you feel that you absolutely need all the the baby equipment that you can lay your hands on. With baby baths I'm not sure if it's a good buy or not. We went into ELC and bought their standard £9 baby bath. When our baby actually arrived and we tried to use the bath, we found it to be most awkward. We always bathed our son together but even with the two of us we couldn't seem to get a real good grip on him. So whilst our son was very small we used to bring him in the bath with one of us and bathe him that way. Once he was big enough to sit up on his own is when we really started to make use of the baby bath. We would put a waterproof table cloth on the floor, place the baby bath on top of it and let him get on with it!! Obviously once he was big enough to sit up on his own he could have gone into our bath, but that would use up much more water than a baby bath. All in all I don't think that I would recommend baby baths to new mums as a necessity, I think you can manage perfectly well without them.

- 05/12/00 Ours didn't get that much use out of it after our eldest discovered the 'big bath'. I can't get her out of it these days, but I have used it a lot more with the second - although I agree totally with what you say about getting a hold on the baby. I'll be glad when she can sit on her own and go in the bath seat. |
