Advantages: easy to use, convenient
Disadvantages: expensive, bad for environment
My little one is now six weeks old and during that time me and my other half have been introduced to the wonderful world that is nappies. Before the baby was born we had noble ideas about using reusable nappies, cheaper and better for the environment We were only going to use disposables for the first couple of weeks whilst we adjusted to parenthood. But what do you know six weeks later we’re still using pampers and the reusable stuff remains untouched.
Pampers have three different categories of nappy new baby, active fit and easy up pants( this I think is a transitional nappy between nappies and underwear).New baby nappies are further divided into three sections newborn, mini and midi. These particular range are unisex.
Newborn is to state the obvious for newborn babies. The front of the nappy is fitted with a special cut out section to allow for the umbilical cord stump, so that a nappy isn’t rubbing against this delicate area. The weight range is 4lb to 11lb which is a big range thus allowing for both ends of the newborn weight range. Mini covers the 7 to 13lb range. Whilst midi covers 9-15lbs.
Each nappy is put on by attaching Velcro like tags to the front area of the nappy, which is decorated with elephants or dogs or various other baby friendly pictures. This is the beauty of disposable nappies they are really easy to get on and take off. Although Scarlett does sometimes object quite strongly to having her nappy put on and would rather madly kick her legs around. I’m trying not to think of the huge amount of time if takes one nappy to biodegrade!
Absorbency wise they are quite good and absorb new baby’s runny poohs. We’ve had a huge accidents where clothes have suddenly been dyed another colour, but generally I think this would sometimes happen with any nappy when our little sweetie is feeling a bit explosive (too much information!)
They are quite good on Scarlett’s skin, she’s only really had very mild nappy rash. One thing to consider is that if your baby is in the lower end of the weight range it may be a good idea to get the next range down. Scarlett is 10lb 10oz and the midi range (9-15lb) covers quite a bit of her legs, whilst the next size down is a bit more snug. They cost about £8.99 for a 32 packet and can be brought from all supermarkets and boots. We will use the re-usable nappies one day, before she’s toilet trained!

- 21/10/04 Papmpers were the only nappies that didn't really leak - and that was for all sizes up to 1.5 - 2 when Katie got toilet trained.
Good luck with the reusables, if you have them it would be pity not to try them, especaillly later on as she gest more manageable - you can use them in the daytime anyway.
