Advantages: Convenient, compact, absorbant

Disadvantages: Expensive, environmentally unfriendly, wasteful

Prior to the birth we made the decision to buy pre-formed cloth nappies, mainly because of the cost of disposables, but also because they help prevent clicky hips and look tres cute!! With all cloth nappies bought and paid for weeks before the birth, we also bought disposables for those very early days when we thought it would be easier to cope, as well as for when out and about so we didn't have to worry about carrying around dirty nappies.

After a few bad nights, I switched to the disposables, thinking they would take the wetness away from the skin and that my baby would not need changing so frequently just for a wet one. A mistake. If anything she needed changing more frequently as she still knew she was wet, with often a wasted nappy during the change as she loves to wee with a free bum. Not such a problem when you are doing a wash anyway, but definitely a problem at such a large cost per nappy.

As a comparison, they are no better for poo leakage than cloth, if anything the leg openings are a little bit big for skinny babies and wouldn't contain as well as the cloth.

But then there's the guilt factor everytime you look at that mountain of waste that goes into the wheelie-bin and that entry on the shopping bill every week that could be something so much better.

Summary: Convenient and easy to use, but babies bums are happier in cloth!
