Advantages: Hygienic

Disadvantages: Expensive, Going against culture - people may think you are weird

Pampers baby wipes were on offer a few weeks ago. Buy one, get one free at Boots. So I bought some - yet I don't have a baby. Even if you don't have a baby, read on to discover the benefits of baby wipes......

A few years ago, in one of my lectures, we were being taught about defecation. The lecturer was saying how poor our hygiene is in the western world. We defecate, then take a piece of dry toilet paper and proceed to attempt to remove any residual faeces. What we infact do, is a very poor job, and manage to irritate our skin, while mashing around bits of excrement. We haven't got a hope in hell of removing everything without leaving any residual behind. He went on to say how people from other parts of the world, particularly Asia, can't comprehend our behaviour. Many of them use water to clean themselves, making sure that they end up completely clean.

When I was in Zanzibar a while back (which is 99% Islamic), the toilet in our hotel had a special attachment - a tube coming out of the cistern with what looked like a shower-head on the end. When you depressed the lever, it sent a jet of water out the end. This provided comedy value at first, but was of immense use when I drank some rotting mango juice and suffered the bowel consequences.

I guess you can see where my opinion is leading......

Toilet paper hasn't been around very long. It is suggested that it was invented in 1857 by an American called Joseph Coyetty. In 1880, the British Perforated Paper Company produced toilet paper in the form of pre-cut squares, to be used after defecating. But the French appear to have had the right idea, inventing the bathroom bidet in 1710 - it hasn't really become a part of all our homes in the UK, though.

Poor anal hygiene can lead to pruritis ani - an itchy anus, and it can also make you smell (wanna see a picture? go here: http://www.afraidtoask.com/bowel/pruritis.html). Just because Englis
h culture says we should only use dry toilet paper, doesn't mean you shouldn't make a change. That's where baby wipes come in.

Baby wipes combine the best of both worlds. They are wet, and they are made of cloth. You keep your hands clean while getting rid of all traces of faeces. Do an experiment - pass a motion, then wipe yourself as well as you think you can with toilet paper. Now, take a baby wipe, and you will be astonished to see that you are removing more residual faeces that you didn't even realise was there.

Pampers baby wipes are a well known make. I'm reviewing them because they were on offer. You can see them, and their range of other products at www.pampers.com. I can particularly recommend the Sensitive Pampers Baby Wipes. They are alcohol-free, and contain water and aloe.

www.pampers.com describes them as:
"The real gentle cleaning for even the most sensitive skin.
Because skin is one of the most receptive organs, it gets stimulated by every single touch. It is very sensitive, and therefore needs natural care especially when it comes to cleaning. New unscented Pampers Sensitive Wipes + Aloe. They are as mild as water, soft as cotton and so gentle that they are even suitable for newborns."

I particularly agree with the last bit - as mild as water and soft as cotton. They certainly feel that way! They are also good as they are unscented, so you won't end up smelling like a perfumerie.

Pampers products are made by the Procter and Gamble company, and produce in the UK is manufactured in the EU (my particular packet was made in Spain - just incase you were wondering). The sensitive baby wipes have been clinically tested and proven to gently clean even sensitive skin (according to the packet).

You don't have to use Pampers, any make will do, but as this category is about Pampers, here are the types available, and the prices (as sold at www.wellb
eing.com aka Boots):

Pampers Wipes - 72 Pack - £3.59
Pampers Wipes Refill - 72 Pack - £2.99
Pampers Wipes Twin Refill - 144 Pack - £4.99
Pampers Wipes Jumbo Refill - 288 Pack - £9.49

Pampers Sensitive Wipes Refill Pack - 63 Pack - £2.85
Pampers Sensitive Wipes Refill Pack - 126 Pack - £4.99
Pampers Sensitive Wipes Jumbo Refill Pack - 252 Pack - £9.49

As you can see, the sensitive skin Pampers wipes work out a little more expensive than the regular type. The refill packs come without a hard box, but they have an easily re-sealable top to the packet. The soft packets also have the advantage of fitting in ladies' handbags.

At the time of writing, Boots have another offer on, but this is on Johnson's Skincare Wipes Refill Pack - 72 Pack - £2.99. Johnson and Johnson is another well known brand name. This offer is buy one, get one free, so you are well advised to buy this product at the time being. The offers are continually rotating and Pampers is sure to be back on offer soon!

They do work out quite expensive, but by only buying them when on offer, and using them in combination with regualar toilet paper, they are well worth the money!

Although not designed for adult use in such a way, if you'd use them on a baby's bottom, then surely it's okay to use them on your bottom. The responsibility is yours, especially if you decide to flush them down the toilet and block your drains (this hasn't happened to me yet).

Good luck, and happy wiping.

Echo the comments below! I have a baby and a healthy supply of wipes so I shall certainly be taking your advice on board! Freaked out at how anally-unhealthy we all inadvertently are! Eew!

All I can say is that there is NO WAY I'm going to look at that picture. No way!!! (Certainly not before eating, anyway.)

Very informative and interesting, yet alarming and scary! ;-)

Great op!! I had to come and read this after someone left a comment after my moist loo roll op extolling the delights of yours!! When I cleaned for an Egyptian psychiatrist and his Palestinian wife I came across the toilet showers you described, I was fascinated and found them invaluable for slooshing around the loos and bidets once I had cleaned them! I am sure the Doc didn't use them as such!!!
Cheers!
