Advantages: Total Care and Active Fit ranges
Disadvantages: Expensive, Baby Dry range, environmental concerns of all disposable nappies
Pampers are one of the most expensive premium brands of nappies, so they must be the best, right? Well, not necessarily.
There are three types of Pampers nappies: the New Baby Total Care, Baby Dry, and Active Fit ranges. I have used New Baby Total Care nappies for both of my sons and been very pleased with them; they are extremely absorbent (we’re talking runny poo here), well fitting without cutting in to baby’s delicate skin and never leaked. A pack of 56 newborn size costs £6.98 at Tesco, or 13p each. In comparison, Tesco newborn nappies are 7p each. However, I think the extra expense is worth it. The New Baby Total Care nappies are available from newborn, through sizes 1 to 3 (9-20lbs, or 3-6kg).
The Baby Dry range is available from size 2 (“mini”) through to size 6 (“extra large”, 35+ lbs, or 16+ kgs). They start at 15p per nappy, rising to 23p per nappy for the largest ones. However, the nappies have “fixed” sticky tabs that do not stretch or give at all, so it is difficult to get a snug fit and the nappy consequently leaks, even though it is highly absorbent. I prefer the Tesco range for my son.
The Active Fit range, which starts at size 3, is brilliant. The nappies have a shaped core to fit better between baby’s legs, allowing them more freedom when they get on the move, and have the “elasticated” leg cuffs, back and stretchy sides to ensure a snug fit. However, at more than 20p each, I could not justify buying them for my still-immobile (yet LARGE) baby.
I have rated below for the Total Care range, which is the first a new parent is likely to encounter. They lose a star for price.

- 23/02/05 I used Pampers for my daughter, but found they ALL leaked on my son. I used to switch between brands depending on size, because where Huggies fit for newborn, they leaked in the next size up. Guess it is all just try it and see. Sam xxx

- 20/02/05 I've never been that impressed with Pampers. I think they seem to look very bulging on not much wee compared to own brands like Tesco. I'm sure this is a ploy to make you change the nappy more often and therefore you have to buy more, more often - but it might just be me being cynical!

- 18/02/05 I loved the pull-ups (you don't mention them) as well as the Active Fit ones. Pampers were the only nappies that didn't leak.
