Advantages: Cheap in the long run, Eco friendly
Disadvantages: Need nappy buckets, Need a washing machine, Need a tumble dryer
I bought Popolinos from Little Green Earthlets, an online environmentally friendly store. They recommended 20 nappies with a couple of wraps for each size. The Popolino nappies are adjustable with poppers and should last until my little girl is potty trained... then I can use them for any other little ones I may have in the future! I decided to investigate reusables as they are a cheaper and better alternative for the environment than the plastic ones we fill our bins and landfills with. I have been very pleased with these nappies. They are absorbent and Jasmine (my 4month old) has never had any problems with nappy rash, etc. When soiled I use a nappy bucket 3/4 filled with water and 5 drops of tea tree oil ( a natural oil known for its anti bacterial and antiseptic qualities ). When I have a full bucket I can just bung them in the washing machine, with or without other washing, on 60 degrees. I only use a non bio powder as conditioners make nappies less absorbent. When washed I stick them in the tumble dryer and hey presto - fresh nappies without carting them back from the shop. You can line dry them to be more eco friendly... but this takes 6 hrs. I only have 14 daytime nappies so I can't do that. I have 6 bedtime nappies - the same sort but terry towelling for extra absorbency. The nappies even come with extra liners for when your little one grows and wees more! You need to have "wraps" to put on top of these nappies. I use the popo wraps which are simple to use. They are velcro adjustable. I have 2 in most sizes. They come in XS, S, M, L and XL. I didn't need XS and I didn't get the L and XL as I thought by then my daughter will have learnt to undo velcro... not a good idea! So I got motherease popper ones in larger sizes. The wraps only need handwashing when soiled or if you feel they need a wash. They dry on the radiator in about an hour.
Overall, I would recommend these nappies to anyone. My only reservation is that it is easier to use disposables when travelling. Also, to start with as newborns get through tons of nappies a day.

- 01/03/02 Good opinion! We used this kind of nappy for a s long as we could, but Thomas has rather sensitive skin which started to suffer a little, so we had to change to disposables. We did our best though and will try again! |

- 01/03/02 Great opinion, I used to use terry nappies for my children - much more friendly on the pocket and environment.
