Advantages: cheap, absorbant, trim fitting

Disadvantages: might not be absorbent enough for a heavy wetter on its own

I know that some people don't use cloth nappies because they are unable to afford the initial outlay for nappies and wraps. Well, a lot of places do hire schemes or budget schemes but for those who don't fancy that, prefolds might be the right way to go.
They are made from layers of cotton, flannel or twill material sewn together to form 2 outer panels and an inner panel. Newborn size is usually 3 layers on each side of a 6 layer panel ( called 3-6-3) and regular is 4-8-4 and larger. You can also get a toddler size if prefolds are your main nappy option.
You can use them for a variety of different methods of nappying.
You can fold them round into a shaped nappy and pin them. They make lovely snug fitting, un-bulky fitted nappies and are very absorbent this way.
You can pad fold them and just lay the into a suitable wrap to hold them in place. This is quick and easy to do.( good for hubby!)
Lastly, you can use them as boosters folded into a pad and placed either in or over the top of a nighttime nappy for extra absorbancy at night.
They are one of the cheapest type of nappy but definitely a must have in your collection. Some use them exclusively, some just as boosters but most of us have some!
