Advantages: cheap, crossbar, swivel seat

Disadvantages: crossbar could 'cause injury', hard plastic

By the time my son was 4 months old it was already almost impossible to bath him in the baby bath that we had been using so it was into the ‘big bath’ he went. However, my husband, who baths him most nights was finding it very difficult to hold him safely by leaning over the side of the bath. There was only one thing for it, we had to by a bath seat.

Although most bath seats are not really recommended until the baby can sit up on its own we decided that our son would be OK. Off we went to mothercare and came back with the cheapest they had in stock - it was the Safety 1st bath seat. It cost us £9.99 and in my opinion has been a very good buy.

Our seat is bright blue plastic with three different coloured 'toys' on the front. These 'toys' are merely round pieces of plastic which can be turned round and round by baby. My son does this but doesn't even notice he's doing it, as it's hardly noticeable or eye-catching. There is a crossbar at the front of the seat which prevents the baby from slipping down into the bath, although my husband found it necessary to wrap a pieces of cloth round this to prevent my son from hurting himself (or more to the point to protect his chances of becoming a father later in life).

There are three suckers that stick to the base of the bath to prevent it from slipping and so far (after 5 months of use) are working well. The other key point about this seat is that it can be swiveled round. Neither my husband nor myself ever use this function so I've no idea useful it is. It's supposed to make it easier to clean all of your child but I find that my arms are long enough to reach round him.

When we first started using this seat my son used to slip a lot, this was largely due to the fact the he was unable to sit very well. However, now that he is 9 months old, and sitting unaided, he is able to sit up in the seat, lean over the edge of it and splash.

I am
sincerely hoping that this seat lasts us for a good deal longer, although I feel that perhaps as he gets heavier the strain of him leaning sideways out of the seat will cause the suckers to give. However, only time will tell and I will update this opinion to let you know how long it does eventually last us.

I have never felt the need for a bath seat for my children. Good informative op though.
