Advantages: Leaves your hands free for washing, simple to use

Disadvantages: uncomfortable, particularly for boys

have just purchased a bath seat for my young baby as my sister recommended it to me. My son aged 5 months has now outgrown his bath and I was finding it difficult to bathe him in the big bath. I bought the bath seat thinking that it would be ideal for him to sit him without me holding him over the bath - no more back ache.

The safety 1st bathseat cost me £9.99, but I know the price can vary between £9-£12.00. What attracted me to this bath seat is that the seat can swivel 360 degrees, making washing baby a lot easier. I found the bath seat useful as I have a corner bath with steps around so holding baby in the bath hurt my back so I found the bath seat made bath time more comfortable for baby and me. Or so I thought...

The seat is made of blue plastic and it sits on the swivel base, which can be detached if you so wish when you are not using it. There is a rattle-type toy attached to the cross-bar for baby to play with while you wash him. The seat is designed in the same way as a baby swing, where the baby sits in and his legs are placed either side of the cross bar. To keep the seat secure in the bath four large suction pads are on the bottom of the base and the suction is very strong making the seat virtually impossible to move. I have had some difficulty in removing these pads from the bath. However, it's good to know that the seat can't slip or tip over in any way.

The only fault I have found with the seat is that it can be very uncomfortable for little boys. A couple of times while using the seat my son has slipped back and his precious bits have been squashed against the cross bar causing pain. The only way I have been able to avoid this happening is by supporting him while he's sitting in the seat, or placing a large sponge in front of his tummy. I think perhaps the manufacturers should have thought more about the design when making the seat as the hard plastic can cause pain. If perhaps the crossbar was mad
e of either foam or sponge then these little upsets could be avoided.

I didn't know these existed! But I don't have a baby so think I am excused; sounds like it will make a great gift, a couple of my friends have just had babies so may get them this for when their babies are too big for their baby baths. And the babies are girls so shouldn't be too uncomfortable for them!

Having your bits squashed can't be good!
