Advantages: once bought you have them forever, environmentally friendly

Disadvantages: need to be changed more often, more work involved

When my eldest son was born 13 years ago there was not much choice in nappies and I bought 3 dozen terry squares. I used these most of the time at first and only used disposables for going out. The only nappies which were a good fit on him were Peaudouce T shape ( bet nobody remembers those!).

I used to soak the wet ones in one bucket and the soiled ones in another, flushing away the disposable liners. I then washed them when I had a full load, drying them on the line and finishing them off with 10 minutes in the tumble dryer to soften them. I used to love seeing them all on the line and I'm sure I didn't spend as much on washing as I would have on disposables.

As he got older I used disposables a bit more but never totally.

My second son had very sensitive skin and couldn't wear disposables for more than 2 days without being red raw so he almost entirely wore terry nappies. When he was older he could go 4 days in Asda VIPs which I thought were excellent but could not wear pampers or huggies. I found that he wouldn't fit into the right size trousers for his age as manufacturers had started to make them smaller for disposable covered botties.

My daughter wore half and half as we were moving house when she was 4 months old and then was ill in hospital for a while.

My youngest hardly wore terries, partly because I had two in nappies at the same time and partly because they are hard to fit under modern clothing. I always felt guilty buying nappies when I could have used terries.

My kids all went completely into terries before potty training and I think this helped as disposables don't feel wet so they don't make the association as quickly. Children seem to be getting later becoming dry and I am sure this is due to modern nappies being so dry and comfy combined with mum not being as bothered as she doesn't have to wash them.

One problem I always had was finding waterproof p
ants that were effective and if I found good ones I tended to buy up the whole stock!

My kids don't need nappies anymore but they are still in full use for all sorts of things. We use them as small towels, keep some in the car for emergencies, use them as seat protectors and use the worn ones for general cleaning or polishing the car

My son is 14 now, and we still have bits of old nappy rags laying around.

Good op. I agree its easier to potty train in terrys and they are so useful afterwards.

I do so agree with you, although I've only one daughter who is just 16 months. Lots of good points made, the ones I totally empathise with being the plastic pant search, and the fact that babies know when they are wet ( although I'm a long way off from the potty training, she is aware, when using terries, and not when in disposables.:)
