Advantages: Good fit, Absorbant, Cheaper than Pampers

Disadvantages: Don't seem to be any except possibly environmental concerns, like all disposable nappies

When I had my first child, I only bought him premium branded nappies. After all, they were the most expensive, so they must be the best, right? And my little bundle of joy was only ever going to have the best! We tried Pampers and Huggies, and settled on using Pampers on an on-going basis as they never leaked.

Of course, all that has now changed with baby #2 and the harsh economic realities of only one wage lol. When he was first born (and with a 2 year old who is still in pull-ups) I used, as I had with my first, Pampers New Baby Total Care nappies, which are expensive. However, son #2 is, how shall I put this politely, fond of his food and quickly grew out of the Total Care sizes (1 to 3, up to 7kg). Beyond size 3, you have a choice of Pampers Baby Dry nappies, or Pampers Active Fit. I am not that keen on the Baby Dry range, because they have “fixed” sticky tabs that do not stretch or give at all, so it is difficult to get a snug fit and the nappy consequently leaks, even though it is highly absorbent. The Active Fit range is brilliant, but very, very expensive and I could not justify buying them for my still-immobile (yet LARGE) baby. Before you start to think that this is a Pampers review, I should say that I decided to try Tesco own brand nappies, and have not looked back. I am so impressed with them.

The price differential between Pampers and Tesco nappies is not as large as you might think. My son is currently wearing size 4+ (9-20kg, or 20-44lbs). An “economy” pack of Pampers Baby Dry 58 nappies costs £8.96, or two for £16 (13.8p per nappy). An economy pack of Tesco Superfit 58 nappies is £7.99, or £14 for two (12.1p per nappy). If you use 6 nappies per day, this saves about 70p per week.

However, as I mentioned before, I find the Baby Dry range are not a great fit. In contrast, the Tesco Superfit nappies have stretchy tapes that ensure a snug, secure closure at the waist; they are “elasticated” at the legs and across the back and have a good shape to prevent leaks (or, in fairness, maybe it’s just because I have a much more “cuddly” baby this time). Whichever is the case, I have never found the Tesco Superfit nappies to leak, even though he is now rolling over, and I have also found them to be absorbent enough to last all through the night. No problems with nappy rash either, though I do use barrier cream (which Pampers claim you don’t need with their nappies, though in practice I always did anyway).

The Tesco Superfit nappies also have a cute motif on the front waistband of cuddly hippos, lions and elephants (gives mum something to coo over at the changing table). Ah, bless.

In summary, I find them great, will continue to use them, and, the best part of all, in this case the best are not the most expensive. Result! :-)

The only ones that didn't leak on my daughter (she was big too!) was, unfortunately, Pampers!

Great review, my son is a bit bigger than usual too and I have also found that the active fit nappies are too expensive but the normal ones don't stretch enough, these ones are just right. Jens x
