Advantages: Cheaper than leading brands and for use proved more effective
Disadvantages: None
When I was pregnant with my first child, I was very careful packing my bag for going to hospital not only for me, but for my baby. Everything I packed had to be just so. I had no idea about what was best or indeed what I need or how many I needed. I opted for branded everything, nappies were Pampers, and from memory, wipes were Johnson and Johnson.
When Lara arrived, she was smaller than any of the newborn vests and sleep suits I had, didn't want to breast feed, and did 8.....yes 8 poo's within her 1st 24 hours of coming into the world. I had packed about 6 or 7 nappies.....oh my goodness, how little did I know back then dispite having read several baby books and mags. I was buying Pampers Newborn Nappies at £3.49 from Tesco, for a pack of 32, size 1. I continued to do this for a few weeks. Then I read a review in Mother and Baby Magazine where 8 or 10 brands of nappies for newborns were tested. It included the leading brands, Pampers and Huggies, but also tested many Supermarket and own brands. Including Sanisbury's, Tesco, Boots, Asda and Summerfield. Huggies and Pampers faired quite well, just above average, Boots did OK, Sainsburys ones they fount to be poor, hard and leaky, but Tesco did amazingly well......top of the nappy pops!!
Off I went to get some. To my joy, at the time they cost £1.00 for a pack of 24!!!! Wow!!!!
The packet was similar to Pampers Newborn....yellow....infact, very similar. Opening the packet, visually there was not a great deal of difference from the Pampers nappy. It had a similar waistband, with velcro re-fastenable waist band. The legs had elasticated double section. And the actual nappy section seemed very soft and comfy for the baby.
Having passed the first few days of horrid black tar like poo, we were at the very runny leak prone stage. I found with the Pampers nappies, I had a leak 1 in 3 times on average. With the Tesco ones, I genuinly didn't have any problems with leaking, and when washing was being done with non bio washing powders that didn't seem to get 'stains' out at all, this was a Godsend! My daughter was very long and thin, and I think these nappies have a better elasticated leg band. Sat far more snuggly around her legs and around the belly. Also very soft around the still sore belly button.
Overall, I have been extremly happy with the Tesco own brand newborn nappy. I feel they are far superior to the leading brand, and at the much much cheaper price a real bargain. The no longer sell at £1.00. They are currently listed online for £1.66 for 24, still over half price compared to the leading brands.
Summary: A great buy, worked a treat
