Advantages: cheaper than other shop own brands
Disadvantages: plastic outer, tabs don't reseal
I have recently read an opinion which suggested that Tesco Value Nappies were a waste of time. I have not found this to be the case, so I thought I would write about our experience with these nappies. When my daughter was first born, it was my intention to use reusable nappies. We did this for a while, once she was big enough (see my op on Cloth v disposables) but soon gave up. Having lost quite a bit of money buying these and then not using them, I really did not want to have to fork out lots of money each week on disposable nappies. I generally tend to buy own brand products anyway, unless there is a good reason not to (like Heinz Tomato Ketchup - no other brand touches it!). I bought a few packs of different nappies to start with so I could test them all out. At this stage I couldn't use the Value Nappies because they only start from 15lbs, but I did buy a pack of Tesco Ultra Nappies. After trying all the brands I found the Tesco own brand nappies to be as good as any of the more expensive nappies, so I stuck with those. Once my daughter reached 15lb I started buying the Value Nappies. I must admit that I didn't like them quite as much as the Ultra Nappies. They have a plastic covering, rather than the soft fabric type covering of the other nappies. They also do not have re-fastening tabs, so once you undo the tab, you cannot do it up again and have to use a new nappy. However, I decided to persevere because the price difference was so enormous and I soon got used to them. I now use the Value Nappies all the time. My daughter has a regular toilet routine and I find that I can usually put one nappy on first thing in the morning, another one at lunch time and another before she goes to bed. Occasionally she wakes up wet in the mornings, but this is always because she has had a drink in the night. I tried using other nappies at night but I had the same problem with them, so I don't think the Value Nappie
s are at fault. My daughter has never had nappy rash and her skin doesn't feel wet when you take the nappy off. To give you an idea of the price difference, below are the prices of three different types of nappies: Pampers Maxi Economy Pack No of nappies = 62 Price per pack = £8.99 Price per nappy = 14.4p Tesco Ultra Maxi Economy Pack No of nappies = 62 Price per pack = £7.99 Price per nappy = 12.9p Tesco Value Maxi No of nappies = 20 Price per pack = £1.98 Price per nappy = 9.9p My local Tesco do seem to run out of these nappies quite frequently so I try to stock up just in case. I get quite annoyed when I have to buy a more expensive brand. So, if you are at the nappy stage of life and you haven't tried these, give them a go. They do not appear to work for everyone, but if they work for you, think of the money you will save!

JEHodgson - 11/09/01 We used the cloth ones for a while, but found the disposable ones far more effective; Thomas kept getting nappy rash from towelling nappies. |
