Advantages: cheap
Disadvantages: smell awful, too wet
Yup … Jammy talks dirty in an op! Well … actually, she talks about how to clean the dirt up … but it is not nearly as catchy is it? Dirty hands, messy faces and pooey bums! We have all been there at one point in our lives haven’t we? Sure we were all helpless babes once, squishing poo in our nappies, attempting to feed ourselves making a right mess on our faces, and sticking our hands in whatever we can, not caring about the outcome! Well, us parents of young sproglets are still there. Nope … we don’t still squish poo in our nappies, but we do have to deal with it. Gone are the days when good old fashioned soap and warm water does the job, now most of us turn to wet wipes because of the effectiveness and convenience they offer. With plenty of brands many of which have different varieties on the market to choose from … how do we choose which ones to buy? Cost? Brand name? Fragrance? Special offers? Or perhaps by reading a consumer review?? I have an eight month old boy, Reuben. I also have Jamie, who is three now. Wet wipes get used a lot in my house, and as I was a nanny for eight years before having my own children, I would say I have used many different brands of wet wipes. Perhaps I could call myself an expert by now? Saying that though I can be swayed in my purchasing decision by any special offers that may be around. After all I do get through loads of wipes, and don’t see the point of paying out more than I have to. A couple of weeks ago I was shopping in Tesco, walking down the baby section, when I noticed that they had their own brand wet wipes on offer. Buy two get a third free. This was the only offer on wet wipes at the time so in they go into my trolley. Did I make the right choice? Let’s see … • • • What VARIETY did I get? • • • Tesco actually do several types of we
t wipes. The ones on offer this time were the fragrance free thick wipes. You can get fragrance wet wipes and moisturised wipes. • • • COST • • • As this was the thing that swayed me to buy them, it must have been pretty good. However, had they not been on offer what would they have cost me? Tesco fragrance free thick wipes cost £1.59 for a packet of 80 wipes. This works out to be just under 2p a wipe. Prices of leading brands, such as Pampers and Huggies work out at slightly more than this, but as there are always different offers around, or multi-pack bargains, you can usually get them down to around the same price. A quick comparison with some of the other brands available … Tesco … 1.9p each Huggies Cotton Touch .. 4.2p each Johnson’s … 2.4p each Boots … 2.6p each Pampers … 2.8p each As you can see, prices really do vary for baby wipes, but so does the quality. Tesco Fragrance free thick wipes do come up as one of the cheapest though, even without an offer on. • • • Tesco THICK wipes • • • The wipes claim to be thick, and compared to some they are, but don’t expect anything near as thick as say the Huggies Cotton Touch wipes. Tesco wipes are thick enough not to put your finger through whilst cleaning a bum (phew!) but I have torn quite a few wipes up just be trying to get them out of the packet. Not great! • • • Fragrance FREE • • • Open up a packet, nose down … smell! Fragrance free? Hardly! They smell gross! I can’t even begin to describe the smell. It really is not pleasant and certainly isn’t fragrance free. It doesn’t even smell clean in my opinion! Definitely a thumbs down here from me. I will be going for a fragrance variety next time. •
; • • WET wipes • • • These certainly are that! WET! The wipes are full of moisture. Way too much though. If you take a wipe out of the packet, and squeeze it you will soak your hands and whatever is underneath it at the time. (Do you think my computer will still work now after I have just soaked it?!!) You may not think this is much of a problem, after all don’t you need moisture to clean effectively? Sure, you need a bit, but not this much. Two of the main problems I have come across regarding the wetness are … ~ Faces and hands are left with a frothy slime across them after cleaning, which can’t be very pleasant for the child, and not good for their skin. ~ I find that nappy cream will not rub in to baby’s bottom after wiping now. The bottom is left wet and greasy and creams just wont rub in. Again, not good for the skin and the prevention and treatment of nappy rash. ~ If you need to clean up a really dirty nappy, because the wipes are so wet, the water mixes with the mess and runs down, often making the vest or clothes underneath wet and dirty as well. Tesco wipes really are too wet. • • • Now on to CLEAN talking! • • • As far as cleaning goes then these do do the trick. They clean up the messiest of faces, hands and bottoms. The main problem is though that you usually need another cloth handy to clean up the wetness afterwards. • • • The PACKAGING • • • These wipes come in a mint green colour packet. They have a white resealable label on the top, displaying the product name. The 80 wipes are crammed into the packet. To get a wipe out apparently you have to “peel back the label and use wipe as required.” Yeah right! Peel back label, stick you fingers in to a soggy mess, and try and find the end of a wipe to actually p
ull out. Once you have managed to get hold of a wipe you start to pull it out, only to have it rip, giving you only half a wipe! This is certainly not a one handed job. Make sure you have taken wipes out before changing a nappy. Once again .. a thumbs down from me. • • • Kind on SKIN • • • NOPE! The packet claims that the wipes are dermatologically tested and mild and gentle. Perhaps if they weren’t so wet they would be fine? However, after using wipes on faces and bottoms and seeing how red the skin can get afterwards I would question whether they were good for the skin at all. Surely putting something so wet on delicate skin can’t be good? Reuben has had a sore bottom after I have used these wipes for a while. He needs cream on to help the soreness caused by the wipes, but the cream wont rub in. His face also comes up red after wiping with a Tesco wipe. I wouldn’t say that he has over sensitive skin either. Hands seem fine with the wipes though, but the skin isn’t as delicate there. • • • BORING BITS • • • For those of you that really do want to know what is in the wipes … feast your eyes on below! AQUA …(stacks of it!!) Propylene Glycol, Disodium Cocoamphodiacetete, Polysorbate 20, Citric Acid, Disodium EDTA, Aloe Barbadensis … well the list goes on, but they are the main ingredients! • • • Other INFO • • • No animals have been used in the ingredients and testing of this product. Do not flush wipes down the toilet. Dispose of them with normal household waste ..(just make sure they are in a waterproof container!!!) Packaging is recyclable Tesco will refund or replace the product if it falls below the high standard you expect. Guess what I will be doing next time I go to Tesco?! •
226; • The GOOD • • • ~The price. • • • The BAD • • • ~Too wet ~Difficult to get out of packaging ~Smell awful ~Doesn’t allow the use of nappy creams after wiping ~Leaves delicate skin red • • • My LAST WORDS • • • I liked the price, bought the product and took it home. I opened the product and started using … and hated it! Sometimes bargains are not the bargains you expect them to be! I will not be buying these again, but will wait until another brand goes on offer (wont have to wait long because there are always a few on offer, shop around!) Tesco have disappointed me here. Far too wet with an unpleasant smell. No thanks! For your info … Website … www.tesco.com Address … Tesco Stores ltd, Cheshunt EN8 9SL
