Advantages: small, cheap, reassuring
Disadvantages: only one design so poor choice
I never intended to buy a mat like this whilst I was pregnant, however when I spotted it online, I thought it was a fantastic idea. Originally I planned to use a bath thermometer, but I have found that these can be unreliable at testing the whole of the bath.
The mat comes in a neat box with the Tommee Tippee logo on. It is blue and yellow, a picture of the sea with sea creatures in. The downside is that this is the only design it is available in. Whilst it is unisex, it would be nice if there was more choice, something girly maybe.
The heat sensitive spot is a circle in the middle. It goes red and the words "too hot" appear if the water is too hot, blue and "too cold" if it is too cold, and green with "ok" if the water is fine. The mat sticks to the bath with several suction cups. I found that it actually sticks really well, definitely could not be pulled up even by the most curious toddler. It is quite cushiony so it is comfortable for my daughter to sit on.
The problem with the mat is that storing it is tricky - you can't fold it at all because if you do, it becomes incredibly difficult to stick it in the bath next time, as it creases and the suction cups come up easily. So we now have to store it flat.
Is it accurate? Well we have used it in conjunction with my elbow and a bath thermometer to check, and it is as accurate as the thermometer - ok it doesn't give a reading, but if the thermometer's reading is too high, the spot will turn red on the mat so you get my drift. It is certainly no substitute for you checking it yourself, but it is handy to double check or have it as reassurance.
It is widely available in shops like Toys R Us - I purchased it on eBay for £5 but it retails at a touch under £10 in most stores.
Well worth a try for added reassurance or double checking.
Summary: worth a buy
