A few months ago we bought the Tomy Swim 'N Sing Turtle Bath Toy in a charity for a bargain £1! I thought it looked like a fun toy for the bath but I wasn't expecting a huge amount at that price.
- The Turtle -
The turtle is approximately 20cm in length and is made from plastic. His main body is light green while his mohican hair, tail and shell are dark green. If you turn him upside down you can see he has a yellow stomach and is wearing a red and white stripy swimming costume, what else would a swimming turtle wear? He has a big smile and little eyes. There is a wind up dial on his back which when turned makes his arms spin which in effect makes the turtle do front crawl. If you press down on his mohican he will hum or gargle 'Beautiful Blue Danube'. If he is on his back he hums the tune and when he is on his front he will gargle it. Overall he looks cute, colourful and appealing to small children. He is a decent size, bigger than most of my son's other bath toys. The turtle requires three button batteries, like the kind you would use in a watch. The batteries are lasting well so far.
- Playing with the Turtle -
My son instantly loved playing with this toy when we first gave it to him in the bath. The speed of the swimming is perfect as it entertains my son but isn't so fast it startles him. He loves to catch the turtle and chew on the legs! I like that the turtle will swim on his back or front so that when my son drops him back into the water he will carry on swimming. The humming/gargling is funny for my son and again it is good that the tune is played whether he is on his back or front, it will just change between humming and gargling. Overall a fun and entertaining toy for bath time.
- Age Range -
This toy is recommended from 12 months. My son has been playing it since he was about nine months and I see no reason why it would not be suitable for him at that age. I imagine it will keep him entertained until he is at least two.
- Cleaning -
As I bought this toy second hand I wanted to give it a good clean so I sterilized it with a sterilizing tablet. He seemed to survive this experience.
- Price and Availability -
The turtle retails at around £12 and is available from a number of toy shops and websites. It is possible to get it a bit cheaper with Argos selling it for £9.97 and on Amazon for £8.78 plus postage. I think this is a reasonable price as it does quite a lot for a bath toy. Of course I am very pleased I managed to get ours for just £1!
- Would I Recommend? -
I would definitely recommend this toy if you are looking for a bath toy that is a bit bigger and more entertaining than many other toys available. It is definitely worth it if you can pick one up for under £10. My son loves it so I am very pleased with my purchase.
Tomy's Swim N Sing Turtle is the follow up to Splashy The Penguin and my 9 month old son absolutely loves it!
Dressed in a red and white striped swimsuit the turtle floats in water (as you would expect from a bath toy!! :-) ), until the child picks it up and places it in his or her mouth - or maybe that's just in my house!........
There is a wind up dial on the turtle shell which, when wound up, works the arms and legs and allows it to do what turtles were born to do and swim up and down your bath! However, my favourite bit about this toy is when you push down on his Mohican - and which self respecting turtle would be seen without a spiky hairstyle these days!!! Pushing down on his green hair causes him to start humming Beautiful Blue Danube, if he is on his back he hums normally however if he is face down he will gargle it as if he is under the bath water. The humming can change mid song as well, so if you start him off on his back, then turn up the right way and then back upside down again his humming/gargling would change accordingly!
When boxed the product weighs 400g (information shamelessly stolen from Amazon!) and therefore weighs slightly less when out of the box and I would estimate it's length at around 6-7 inches.
Tomy recommend an age range of 12 months upwards but as previously mentioned my son is 9 months old and I have absolutely no qualms about letting him play with it, plus he absolutely loves it!
I paid a little under £10 for this in a toy shop so it is by no means the cheapest bath toy in the world however seeing my boy's face light up when he sees it makes it amazing value for money!
I would recommend this for all families with small children and I'm sure it will make the parents smile/laugh as much as the kids!
Thanks for reading - all criticism/tips gratefully received!
If like Splashy the Penguin, you'll love his new friend Swim 'n' Sing Turtle. This delightful turtle, complete in striped bathing suit will bring fun and laughter not to mentioned music to make bath time special. Wind him up and watch him swim, place him on his back and he hums Beautiful Blue Danube whilst he swims, put him on his front and he'll even gargle it!
