Advantages: Great for sore and chapped bits
Disadvantages: Greasy
Before I start this one I had better warn you that there will be references to unpleasant bodily functions later. That information will either make you stop reading at once or carry on just out of curiosity - but you have been warned!
I have decided that it is about time I wrote an opinion about one of the versatile items in my First Aid or make up box. The item in question is the humble pot of Vaseline Petroleum Jelly.
I have read some information and reviews on Vaseline recently to find out the current prices and interestingly the prices now are much lower than they were a few years ago and you can't say that about many products can you?
Anyway a 100g tub is currently 68p in Tesco's or 93p in Boots. I think that this product is also available in 200g tubs in some shops and also in 20g pocket tins too.
It is 100% pure petroleum jelly - no additives or colourings so therefore it's hypoallergenic and suitable for almost everyone.
I use it mainly to combat dry skin. I suffer badly from chapped lips for which I use a lip saver but I usually put Vaseline on my lips at night before I go to sleep as this gives a more intense moisturisation. The fact that it works during the night means that I don't notice any discomfort from the fact that it is quite greasy.
It is invaluable when I have a cold as then it's not only my lips that are dry it is the end of my nose too, where I keep blowing it. I end up looking like Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and believe me it's not a pretty sight! Again I use the Vaseline just before going to sleep, mainly because that way it will stay on, as I won't be blowing my nose while I'm asleep, if you see what I mean.
The other main reason for the appearance of Vaseline in my First Aid box is a less savoury subject for discussion but I'm going to tell you anyway, just don't say that you weren't warned.
Occasionally I suffer from bouts of diarrhoea. Incidentally my first attempt at spelling that was so bad that even the spell check didn't know what I was trying to say! Anyway back to the subject in hand, when I suffer the opening to my back passage gets very sore indeed. It's no good I must stop using the colour supplement and get some toilet roll!
Seriously though, it doesn't matter how soft the toilet roll is, I still get very sore and Vaseline is the only thing I have tried that will relieve the discomfort. I know it's not a pleasant thought but, when I'm feeling so uncomfortable I need something which will work and Vaseline does and quickly too.
I suppose it's only logical really, Vaseline is the stuff that mom's use for babies nappy rash so there's no reason why it shouldn't work just as well for adults on chapped skin on any part of the body.
It can be used as a moisturiser or eye make up remover but it is too greasy for me to use it for either of these reasons.
I also have a non-medical use for this product. I have purchased a house number on a black plate to put on the wall of my porch. Before I left it out in all weathers I was advised to smear it with Vaseline first to protect it.
I'm sure there are many more uses for this most versatile of products but I have just told you the reasons why it is in both my First Aid box and my make up box!

Summary: One product I could not do without!
