Advantages: Very cheap, leaves lips smooth and soft

Disadvantages: None

I always carry a little pocket sized blue tin of Vaseline in my handbag for when my lips get chapped, which happens especially often in winter. It cost me £1.49 from Superdrug last year and is still going strong now. The little tin is fantastic because it is a nice flat shape so it slides in the little inside pocket that most handbags have, so you always know where you can find it! It is blue all over with white wording and the Vaseline logo on the lid. I also have a medium sized plastic tub of it which has got to be about two years old - it really does last forever! It has a mild smell but it is a very bland one, if you sniff it you can smell 'something' but it is not scented at all.

It is easy to apply, just dip a (clean!) finger in and rub it onto your lips. A little bit goes a long way and I have never found any product that leaves my lips feeling as soft as Vaseline. When I am run down I get horrible ulcers in my mouth from stress and it makes my lips dry and painful, and then I put an extra thick layer on and around my lips when I am in the house for intense moisturisation. It is basically just a pot of petroleum jelly, a yellowy/creamy colour which is clear when you apply it. I also use it at home overnight if I have any pathes of really severe dry skin, where my normal moisturiser is not helping.

I use it rather than lipgloss on a night out, as it makes my lips look natural and soft rather than the stickiness that lots of clear lipglosses leave you with. I know a lot of my friends do the same.

It may be in the baby section but I can honestly say, hand on heart, that I have never found a use for it with my son.

My husband uses it at home too, as he has a job which involves working outside on the docks so his skin and lips get terribly chapped. He takes a tube of Chapstik to work because his hands are always dirty so a tin which you have to dip your finger in and rub on your lips would not be hygenic for him, but he uses it when he comes home and gets cleaned up after a shift.

I also used it when I was in hospital a few years ago before and after I had emergency surgery as I was nil-by-mouth for a fortnight, and could not even have sips of water so you can imagine how dry my mouth was. A thick layer of Vaseline on and around my lips was so soothing and gave some much needed relief (although a big drink of water would have been far preferable!).

Summary: Every woman (and man) needs this!
