Advantages: General Skin Protectant, Value for Money

Disadvantages: Residue resides on fingers after application

What is Vaseline?

The name vaseline is a registered trademark of the Unilever brand, specialists in healthcare products.Vaseline pure petroleum jelly contains only one ingredient, Petrolatum. The jelly belongs to a group called emollients, which, by definition, are a substance that smoothes and softens the skin by the slow evaporation of water.
What is Petrolatum?

Petrolatum is also known as a soft paraffin. It is a mixture of hydrocarbons (a semi solid state), that feature carbon numbers above 25. Renowned for its healing properties, the US Food and Drug Administration have declared and approved its sale over the counter as a general skin protectant. The Petrolatum works by forming a film over the damaged area, protecting it while it heals.
Pure Petroleum Jelly Uses

Mainly used as a skin moisturiser, the best recommended use is for the treatment of dry, chapped lips. It can also be used to treat nappy rash and dry skin.
Uses to Avoid

The product should not be applied to fresh burns, only to sooth pain at a later date on minor burns. This is because the petrolatum can trap heat when applied. It should not be used for nasal congestion, or applied anywhere near the nasal passageways. Excessive use this way (through inhalation) can lead to a condition called lipoid pneumonia.
Retail Price For Pure Petroleum Jelly

I bought my first tub of vaseline whilst I was in hospital and in the hospital shop, for 50grams, the price was £2. However, in Tescos a 50gram tub costs £0.89p, and it is the 225gram tub that costs £1.99.
Value For Money

When bought from a supermarket retailer the product is excellent value for money. Only a sparse amount is required for the desired effect, so if it is a first time purchase start with the 50gram tub to see how much is consumed.
All the packaging is recycable, which is an extra incentive to buy, as it does not produce "rubbish".

Summary: Mainly used as a skin moisturiser, especially useful on chapped lips
