Advantages: lots of uses

Disadvantages: can melt in the sun

Chapped lips- check. Dry skin- check. Cuticles- check. Sunburn- check. There aren't many products which can tick off such a diverse list. Vaseline, however, can. Vaseline, either in its big- tub form or its handbag-compatible circular tins, is a trademark product that pretty much everybody's heard of at some point or other.

It's been a part of my own general body care products for as long as I can remember although today's the first time I've actually sat down and had a think: 'Why is it so popular?' 'Why does it never leave my handbag?' 'What makes it so special?'

I think one of the most appealing things about Vaseline is its straight-forwardness. It's a block of petroleum jelly. No frills or sparkles. Simple, clear, solid petroleum jelly. The only thing is it's not quite as sloppy as jelly- so that's slightly misleading- its actually very hard in its original state. Although, depending on the temperature (and if you're like me and sometimes leave it too near the window) it will quickly melt and turn very soft which just means it doesn't last quite as long on the skin.

Other ingredients include: paraffin wax, mineral oils and microcrystalline waxes. Also, because most of the ingredients are fairly simple (no added scents, artificial things etc, the chances of someone being allergic to it are really very slim).

You can either buy the classic tubs of jelly or the circular tins. The tubs are obvious to spot on any shelf. They are see-through tubs, which allow you to see the yellow gel inside, with white and blue lids. These are really useful to keep at home and the larger tubs especially will last you absolutely ages.

Vaseline is especially useful to have on hand for children. My mum used to use it to tame down loose strands of hair, to cover cuts and grazes and to rub on very dry skin, especially in the summer.

I usually just use it on dried out lips as it softens them straight away, the occasional patch of dry skin (especially if I've forgotten to moisturise and only realised this as I'm on the bus on the way to town/work/uni) and sometimes on my eyebrows if I want them to look nice and slick.

Vaseline is a great multi-purpose item that can soften, smooth and slicken and it has a place in every household and every handbag!

Summary: a great multi-purpose item that has a place in every household and handbag!
