Advantages: baby can't kick covers off or end up with them over their face
Disadvantages: A little expensive but in my eyes value for money
I only had a gro-bag for my youngest daughter, I don't know if thery weren't around when I had my other two or whether I just didn't know about them but my sister recommended them to me when I had my youngest and I'm so glad she did.
They are basically a sleeping bag designed for babies and they come in different Tog's 0.5 tog, 1 tog and 2.5 tog to suit the season/temperature of babies bedroom, their website gives great advice on which one suits what temperature and what baby is actually wearing. They are also made in different sizes. As far as I know gro-bag are the original ones but their are tons of companies who make their own versions which can be less expensive.
The idea is that your baby can't kick off their covers like they can with regular sheets and blankets and if they tend to 'roam' around the cot a lot in the night like my little one did the gro-bag 'roams' with them so they don't get cold. Also as you fasten them into it at the shoulders you don't have the worry of them ending up with their covers over their face and overheating.
I used the 1 tog at home during the warmer nights and had a 2.5 one that I used during the winter and as we spend quite a bit of time at our caravan this was also ideal for through the summer there as it can tend to get quite cold at night. I believe that sleeping in a gro bag was a great help in gettin my little one sleeping through the night by 7 weeks and later helped her to settle as easily in her travel cot for the first time as the gro-bag was familiar and a form of comfort to her.
I continued to use them until my daughter my daughter was about 20 months old when she started trying to climb out of her cot but before that she used to enjoy the routine of going upstairs getting into her 'bag' as she called it having a story and then me putting her into her cot, whether or not its just coincidence I can't say but she has always slept better than my other two did and did not go through the sort of separation anxiety that some babies go through when they are old enough to realise they are being left for the night.
Summary: I wish I had discovered them sooner!
