Mamas and Papas Gingerbread Blanket
Advantages: Lovely bright colours
Disadvantages: Snags easily, isn't the softest
I bought the blanket hoping it would be something a bit different from all the other blankets out there so I was a bit disappointed to realise how popular it is! Since buying it I have noticed it everywhere and it seems to be the "must have" item amongst mums on the baby forum I read. Admittedly it obviously shows that I have great taste (!) and that it truly is an attractive blanket, but I couldn't help but feel a tad disappointed that our little boy was now one of many.
We bought the blanket from the Mamas & Papas store in the Trafford Centre but you can also buy it online from their website. We paid £28 for ours, reduced from £35. Mamas and Papas have regular promotions with 20-30% off their nursery ranges so it's worth waiting for the sale (there's currently one on now!)
The blanket really is lovely to look at. It's striped with a variety of colours in it, including red, pink, turquoise and brown, and despite there having pink in it, it doesn't look ovely girly so it's definitely gender neutral. We get a lot of comments when we take the blanket out as it is quite striking.
The blanket has a white border to it which I'm not overly fussed with. It starts to look grubby very quickly and despite being washed it never really regains that newly bought bright white.
As I mentioned earlier we based our whole nursery on this range and due to the wide array of colours it made colour co-ordinating quite easy. I'm also a bit of a saddo and don't like our blankets to clash with what our son is wearing (I know, pathetic!) but I've found it goes with most of his plain coloured clothes.
The blanket is knitted and has small holes in it like a cellular blanket so can be used to wrap up your little one whilst still allowing the skin to breathe. I didn't use it to swaddle my newborn though as the blanket is quite thick and it didn't want to cook my July baby! Also it's a decent size so it would mean wrapping it round twice, meaning that it would add extra layers that aren't needed.
The blanket is a good size without being too big, meaning it's suitable for use in a moses basket, car seat or pram. We still use ours now our little one is in his cot and it covers him easily.
We have hard water in our area so I have to be careful when washing blankets or wool items because they come out feeling rough but it washes reasonably well with Fairy Non Bio liquitabs and Fairy Softener. As I mentioned before the white on the border is hard to keep bright white and I have to be wary of what I wash it with to prevent it looking grotty. We also found that after a few weeks it had little pulls in it as it very easily plucked.
So, what does my son think? Admittedly he is only 4 month old but since I bought it for him I thought I'd include his opinion! Well...in all honesty...he's not fussed. I think perhaps because it's a knitted blanket it's not as soft and snuggly as some blankets. We also bought the fleece Gingerbread blanket, and whilst it wasn't as strikingly lovely as this striped one, it's much softer, and at £29.50 (£23 in the sale!) it's cheaper than the knitted one. Our baby loves the fleece one - he tucks his little hands under it and rubs his cheeks with it until he falls asleep. Very cute! He does the same thing with one we bought from Primark for £3 to use as a spare! It's more than a little bit annoying that after spending almost £60 on two blankets he has a love for a £3 Primarni one!
So, to sum up, it truly is a beautiful blanket. It's eye catching and vibrant and I truly love the colours. It also pleases my inner geek in that it matches our nursery and most of my son's clothes. But, for the price, it's not the best blanket in the world. It's not the softest, it's not the best quality and it doesn't please my son's cheeks! I'd definitely buy the fleece one again but I'm on the fence on this one. Beautiful? Yes. Practical? Not so much.
Summary: Slightly disappointing
