A good product when used safely

At first we umm'd and ahh'd about using the Mothercare Safe Baby Sleeper that we had borrowed from a friend. She had used it and recommended to us, saying that it had been a perfect solution to use in her childs large cot.

It was something that she intended to put away for any future children, but agreed to let us have it for a few months. Having asked her what she paid for it, she told us it was just under £25 to buy new. Although we didn't have to pay for the product, I feel that it was a fair price to pay for an item that can be re-used for more than one child, so can work out as a very good buy.

      **********************************************************
The idea of putting a new born into a huge cot the size of wales (ok slight over statement here) is something that we tried to avoid, by using a moses basket at first. This was really handy for a time, but as we all know babies grow at a rate almost faster than the speed of light!

We soon had to think about what to do in the mid way point between our child looking a little large for a night time sleep in the moses basket and being big enough to go into a full sized cot. When our friend stepped in and suggested we borrow the Baby Safe Sleeper were were not at all convinced that it would be a good idea at first.

      *********************************************************
We thought it was going to be less sturdy and more like a slightly more padded fabric cot bumper. In fact it was far superior in its make up and had a firmer frame and shape to it that fitted easily into place.

Not only did the Baby Safe strap safely under the cot mattress with a set of decent straps, which had a good set of secure plastic snap in fastenings, but it also had a secure plastic section that slotted easily through the cot bars and then turned to lock the whole thing firmly and securely in to place.

This really did put our minds at rest, as it meant that the whole thing was secure enough to feel you could leave it there over night and not worry it would come unhooked, unclipped, move about, etc. You can also tuck blankets under the Baby Safe quite easily although we started out using baby sleeping bags at first.

      **********************************************************
Another handy thing about the product is that you can move the whole thing further down the cot as the baby grows taller and fills up more of the cot space. This was very handy for quite some time.

We removed the Baby Safe once we felt the baby was a able to move around more. As once your child is at the point of being able to grasp the cot bars ready to pull themselves up, the placing of the product may become an issue.

      **********************************************************
In summary the Mothercare Baby Safe Sleeper can be a good product when used thoughtfully and carefully. It has its limitations and should only be used when necessary and I wouldn't want to use it once your baby has matured enough to be able to sit up and grasp the cot bars etc.

If all instructions are followed and the product is well situated I see no reason why it cannot perform a really good job, as it did for us and so gets 4 stars.

        5 out of 5

I had one of these when my son was a baby. He moved into a cot when he was 7 weeks old and he looked so tiny in there I worried that he might get caught up in the blankets when he started to move around. I tried the feet to foot positioning but found he would wriggle his way round the cot too much.

I found this sleeper from Mothercare and it was perfect for making the cot smaller.

It is a large divider that is foam padded and can fit across the width of any cot or cot bed. It is adjustable and can be made longer by pulling the inner divider out and securing it to the cot bars. It fits easily and is easy to secure- once the sleeper is in place just turn the lock and the end and this attaches to the bars, making it impossible for the divider to move unless the lock is released. It works on both horizontal and vertical bars.

There is a elastic strap which fits underneath the matress and this holds the bedding in place. This was a great relief for me beacause I had worried that he would get tangled up in the blankets and would wriggle down underneath them. With the bedding held in place he was able to move freely but the blankets didn't go over his shoulders. He was unable to wriggle down because the sleeper was sitting at his feet stopping him from moving down.

The sleeper is available from birth until about 7 months or when the baby can sit up unaided. It was a great comfort to me knowing that he was secure at bedtimes. I would put spare things like dummies and nappies in the separated part of the cot so I knew exactly where they were at night.

I have only seen the sleeper in white but know that other companies do different colours. It is easy to wipe clean with a damp cloth and I still use it now if I am looking after small babies- it looks as good as new.

The cot divider can also be used if you have twins- one in each end while they are young.

I would recommend this product to anybody with a young baby who is about to go in a cot. It is a great comfort knowing that they are safe at nightimes.

        It currently sells at £24.99
